A 1 to 1 ratio of US Dollars to Badge Points seems reasonable. I think that everyone here knows the value of a dollar, at least to some reasonable error.

Letting people buy things for their friends either by letting them transfer badge points or buy badges as presents for others makes more money because people like to give each other gifts.

This is the point I had. I know a couple of people who I'd like to be able to buy stuff for.

There's more keeping one's piggybank protected than just a password, then?

Also, these: Any suggestions or comments? You can tell what the yellow one is without looking at the filename, right?

It'll be attached to one's account, for one thing... I guess someone could hack it if they were truly dedicated, but why anyone would waste their time, I don't know.

Right. I could also imagine an aftermarket. "Want to sell me that used badge for $3.50"? A person tired of their present mix of badges might take you up on that proposition, essentially "trading in" one badge to build up enough funds for others.

If we limit the editions of certain badges, making them grow rare, this could spur speculation around the prices ... Some people really dig a market game.

"Just a password"? What additional protection do you think it would need?

Eddie, I strongly recommend against allowing troper piggybanks to directly transfer funds. That potentially subjects us to all kinds of regulations that apply to businesses that let people transfer cash to one another. I suppose it's less of a problem given that you can't withdraw funds from your piggybank, but I really don't think you want a visit from the feds.

I dunno. I'm just being paranoid on principle, 'cause there's money involved and this is a low-security site. :/ Somebody who felt like screwing somebody out of a few dollars could hack somebody's account *

and transfer all of their badge points to their own account.

Pretty sure if the cash can't leave our system, it makes no difference whatsoever where it shows up on our internal ledgers.

Not planning to make any agreements to allow the funds to be transferred off-site. I'll check the regs, but I'm pretty sure it is all legit.

I think I'd go for trading badges over trading credits then. Once the credits are goods, they aren't the same as money any more. It still lets people share with friends, but they're not passing around currency.

Looked into it. As long as there in no way to actually exchange BP (badge points) for dollars, it is all good.

A dollar coming into the system gets converted to a BP, and it is only good after that for buying badges and whatever other virtual good we come up with.

It is not a gold mining situation, where there is some other method of coming up with BP's. Each and every BP is backed by a US dollar. Calling it a badge or calling it a badgepoint, it as all just numbers in a ledger.

Question: I'm making a bedsheet ghost badge. The ghost's border is light gray. Should I fill in the outside with black so that the whole costume's more visible, or will having it be inside a black square look too weird next to other badges?

[up] Thing is, one password crack and you can steal all of another guy's badge points. By the sound of it, though, that's the worst it can get, and the points wouldn't really be worth the effort and risk of getting caught and IP banned.

[down] If Valve doesn't mind, maybe. The picture will be for sale, remember.

So it's like TF 2 hats then.

That calls for more TF 2 references. Can we get a Trope Co Supply Crate? [1]

Rhymes with "Protracted."

That looks a bit hard to pull off in the space given. Drawing the sandwhich was hard enough.

We can double lock the accounts. It would be a pain to have your badges swiped, and there is bound to be someone out there with absolutely nothing to do with their time than grief the system.

Exactly what is double lock?

EDIT: Okay. What I am drawing is a black equilateral(-ish) triangle. Inside it is the number 20, in white. Is that easy enough to figure out, and is it a good enough stand-in for the actual die?

Essentially, two passwords are needed for the account. One would be the password for the troper account, the other would be in a RSA public key encrypted 'wallet' on their system. We keep a public key (privately) so we can validate the password in their wallet.

Hard to tell without seeing it, but no, I bet that'd look like a triangle with a number in it, not a d20.

Yeah, well, the best d20 we're likely to get is basically a ball. :/ It's probably a bitch to draw at any size, but I reckon it's pretty much impossible to do at 24^2 pixels. I figured I'd try just one facet of it.

^^ No (re: "best we're likely to get") I think the icosahedron shape is more important than the number "20". (Also lines to distinguish facets is weird, clutters the image and makes it look less like a die, I think. Included an illustrated-looking one anyway.)

I like gold red or silver, but whatever is fine. On black and red the number 20 is (barely) legible.
