They were literally roleplaying The Killers since they were looking for the special copy of the book (which means they were aware of the actual story) and, given the situation with them all in disguise, found it an amusing use of time.

Yeah I gotta agree its a bit disappointing that none of them was real and it was all just the 3 in disguise.
The episode at the start reminded me of that Samurai Jack episode that focused entirely on a team of newly introduced bounty hunters and I thought this was going along those lines.
