I'm fine with the current.
Alt account of Angeldog 2437.It demonstrates fine if you look closely enough to see what it's an image of. I think the real problem is that it's so hard to tell what's going on.
I find the current image to be poor quality. That is a reason to change, it's right there in the pulldown menu when you make a new thread.
The image is also not an example, because it misrepresents what the American box art looks like. That, too, is a reason to change.
I disagree. Using our usual criteria, there is nothing wrong with the current image.
I'm open to other suggestions since a few have been suggested, and there may be an image good enough to be considered an improvement—however, we are not technically "repairing" the image because there's nothing broken about it.
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.Nobody said we're repairing anything. We're picking an image, because this is Image Pickin'. The Trope Repair Shop is that-a-way.
Oh come on. "[T]he current image [is] poor quality [...] That is a reason to change" implies repairing. If we're picking images, go ahead, but let's not use weak excuses to justify it. "Poor quality" is usually used in the sense of resolution/artifacting, not art style.
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.I like the imagine in #5, given that it is an actual example, of the Troper Namer no less.
In this case I think using the real art trumps the webcomic parody.
That's a fair point, but my point is the current image doesn't violate any good image criteria.
On real cover arts, do you think we should use a pair with subtle or glaring differences?
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.I'd much rather have a picture that is an example of the trope than a joke about the trope.
Right. Can we do a crowner instead of having another page of semantics argument?
"Did anybody invent this stuff on purpose?" - Phillip Marlowe on tequila, Finger Man by Raymond Chandler. That's a much more valid reason, but then again, in itself jokes about the trope is not a violation. Many page images use jokes and lampshadings.
We should collect a few more candidates before.
Returning to my question: for juxtapositions, is it better that we look for subtle comparisons or those with greater contrast?
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.Generally, I'd say the more obvious the contrast, the better. In this case, the Kirby arts aren't screamingly obvious, but they're obvious enough that you'd have to be really trying to not see the differences. I think they're fine.

Well, although I'd probably prefer to use a Kirby image, being the Trope Namer and all, I also kind of think of Guardian Heroes...
Japanese boxart◊ (lots of character art, nothing too out of the ordinary)
European boxart◊ (more character art, thematically similar to the Japanese one)
...American boxart◊ (completely different, has a hero apparently fighting another hero, which doesn't happen in-game)

Moon◊I'd like a version of post 13 because it's such an absurd change.
I'm preferring any of the suggestions over the webcomic.
Crowner here. I didn't put the Guardian Heroes one on because it would need to be a composite and I don't like it so I'm not going to make one.
"Did anybody invent this stuff on purpose?" - Phillip Marlowe on tequila, Finger Man by Raymond Chandler.Going to go with Martello's one in post 4 the minimal change really shows that it is the same game just USA Kirby is out for blood.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!And I'm still against every presented real box art. They are already linked on the page in the examples if someone must see the "real thing", to be convinced it is not something some web artist made up.
One image of happiness and smiles against an image of frowns and anger. That's every example on the page. The current image is not pixelated, it doesn't have any unreadable text that is crucial to understanding it, it is not incorrect, there is nothing wrong with it. There is no reason to replace it with another image that is pretty much the same thing other than a few's preference.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackToo late for that. Vote it up if you want, but the majority's already against you.
"Did anybody invent this stuff on purpose?" - Phillip Marlowe on tequila, Finger Man by Raymond Chandler."Poor quality" means objective/mechanical poor quality (like bluriness or artifacts), not subjective "I don't like the art style" poor quality.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. And objectively, the picture is not hard to make out. It is not poor quality. It is just complaints about art style and or parody.
Do you know anyone who stops campaigning just because voting starts? 6 to 7, we can do it.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackYes, "I don't like the art style" is not what "poor quality" means. Regardless, improvements were suggested.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Yeah I'm pretty sure we had this same argument in the All Girls Like Ponies thread.
Art style =/= quality
Sure, but why would you want a dumb-looking parody of the trope rather than not only a perfect example of it, but the motherfuckin' Trope Namer? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Crown Description:
Nominations for replacement images:
I think it's much funnier to show the actual box art than a drawing of it. And the non-Kirby examples are interesting. Busy though.
