I just hope they add in the ability to pick the area on the planet where you start the game.

[up][up][up]Well, at least this mod will make it way easier to create a EU/EW total conversion mod in the future, especially with some of the aliens it might reintroduce.

That looks like a fun little addition - small enough to dip into, but probably crazy hardcore too.

Wonder if we're due a new game in the next year or so. And where it can really go. Terror From The Deep? Multiple bases? XCOM-Solar System Defence?

Hoping that it's not the Apocalypse-style scenario. I don't care for the idea of babysitting a single city from the extra-dimension bugs.

I'm just hoping they bring back EU and EW's armors as more than just cosmetics. Archangel and Wraith would be nice to have again. As well as ME Cs and SHI Vs.

I'm basically shilling shamelessly for mods here, but anyway: if you guys got WOTC, I really recommend the MEC Trooper mod. It's exactly what it is: a port of the ever-popular class from EW for WOTC. Combine it with the EW MEC Trooper voicepacks port and the MEC suit cosmetics port for the fullest MECT experience.

In addition, the Primary Kinetic Strike Module and SPARK Flamethrowers - which is also usable by MEC Troopers - add cool new options for them. And in case you want your Templars and Psi Ops to join in on the roboticized fun with their own powers, there's the Psionic MEC option.

Don't stop, just proceed, 'cause this is what you need-proceed, just proceed, 'cause this is what you need!

That was creepy, I'm listening to some old horror radio dramas and at the precise moment I see that post I'm listening to a mad woman howling about love. Yeck.

We need a spooky X-COM. Where your crappy rookies are actually crappy civilians forced to defend themselves from monsters.

We'd complain less when they miss things standing five feet from them then, I guess.

Yeah. I yell at my idiots in Darkest Dungeon since they don't seem to want to survive, but still. It'd be fun to have a tactical game like X-COM but with horror.

The original X-COM more or less has an atmosphere like that, especially during night missions.

Well, we've got zombies now, and Chryssalids. Or are we speaking less of "horror"-themed enemies and more for a horror genre sort of experience? 'cause the latter would be hard to do if your dudes have assault rifles. Like how Five Nights at Freddy's wouldn't be the same if you had a shotgun.

Are there any mods for SHIVs?

Looks like there's this one, which a) doesn't have any screenshots to show off the goods, b) was apparently put on the Workshop by someone who didn't initially credit the mod's original creator on the Nexus, and c) said original author is working on an update to that mod.

[up][up]It's completely possible to make a horror game even if you're armed with heavy weapons. Just look at F.E.A.R.. And that one mission where you go to an abandoned fishing town just to find the Chryssalids have formed a hive in the carcass of a whale had some good horror vibes.

At best it's about to be out of date. Plus, it's only got a four-star rating, so you know it's garbage.

Just do Alien, except with a Chryssalid. tongue

So that'd be, what, one 'Lid on the map, you're trying to get your guys to an extraction point, none of the squad has weapons, the bug keeps dashing back into the fog of war after gutting your dudes, and Hunkering Down gives a chance for the 'Lid to overlook you?

Huh, we'll have a scenario editor soon, so it might be possible to put something like that together.

Recreating Aliens at least is pretty simple, just put a lot of 'Lids on a tunnel map. Maybe add a feature where soldiers can set up sentry guns from those VIP rescue missions in Lost territory.

It's completely possible to make a horror game even if you're armed with heavy weapons. Just look at FEAR.

Ehhh, FEAR's really two games, a pretty tight FPS with slow-mo, and a spooky first-person exploration game that builds dread through environmental design and sound until expertly plucking your nerves like a guitar string. There's an audible clunk when the title switches between the two, and when they get smashed together for the last fifteen minutes, the result is less than the sum of its parts.

Well, I've only played the first, maybe the sequels do things better.

And that one mission where you go to an abandoned fishing town just to find the Chryssalids have formed a hive in the carcass of a whale had some good horror vibes.

That was closer, yes. A few ominous turns moving through a seemingly-abandoned village, then the zombies and bugs show up, then there's the "we're screwed!" moment with the whale followed by a desperate flight to safety from a foe you can never completely overcome. Of course, a lot of that is trivialized if the mission shows up late enough for you to have MECs, plasma or jet packs.

MECs can be gotten super early, though. Like, second month kind of deal. Lasers are also usually enough to deal with them (provided at least one Squad sight Sniper who can hang out in those little towers in the middle of the map). The SHIV rush strategy can also easily trivialize it, since a basic SHIV is expendable, can move super far, will likely survive a couple hits and can activate the beacon.

And okay, maybe a slightly variation on Alien. Make it all those blue shirts from the Base Defense mission (the ones with 10 Aim worse than Rookies), armed only with ballistic pistols and no grenades, so there's an illusion of being able to fight back on the way to extraction.

EDIT: Actually, I've even got a scenario for this: the base defense has failed. The Commander is nowhere to be seen. Bradford has ordered and evacuation and is waiting at the extraction point. Your squad is six of very few survivors of the attack. All ammunition was expended fighting the initial battle, leaving them with little more than their sidearms. They must now make their way through the damaged corridors of one of the other sectors to reach the extraction point.

The pay-off for winning could be, if the squad makes it to the extraction zone and ends the mission, Bradford spawns on overwatch with a shotgun. The Chryssalid then cinematically bursts out of the vent and Bradford wrecks it with a crit (he cheats and has Opportunist).

One variant I'd love is an XCOM version from the Alien POV - not necessarily the Ethereals, but a conquest mode. Similar to Plague Inc in terms of:

You're a scouting fleet, you need to establish a beach head and then use your nanites to build forces or something.

Or you do start off full strength but you have a finite number of units - and most of them have to fight the conventional forces whilst there's a countdown to XCOM getting enough intel to board your mothership... and you have to (Similar to War of the Chosen) track down the XCOM bases.
