Catching up... I'm pretty much through episode 12. Damnit, Oshima, why can't you be a successful heroine in another anime? You're way too cute to be a side character!

Edit: Okay, with an ending like that, they have to be re-upping it for a second season...

[up][up] From what I heard this episode was anime-original.

[up] I agree completely that she needs to be the main character of her own story. Then again, I love Kana Hanazawa characters.

She was Futaba Aoi in Asobi Ni Iku Yo, wasn't she? I want to watch that show again.

It's to be expected but episode 12 was one of the least conclusive endings ever!

...There are 13 episodes.

My bad. I meant episode 13.

I watched a couple together.

My opinion of episode 13 is as I said.

I did how to at least see the promised picnic though.

I haven't seen episode 12 and 13 yet, but 1-11 is (very good) faithful adaptation.

If 13 is anime-only (and I am assuming has Gecko Ending)... I do not know how to react. On one hand, I do not like Gecko Ending, but on the other hand - the anime staff really did extremely good adaptation with 1 to 11 (and 12 probably).

Will just have to hope that there will be 2nd season.

There's an unaired episode that will be bundled with manga volume 12.

It's not a Gecko Ending, more like The Adventure Continues, romantically speaking.

And it's not like most romance stories that end with a big confession, re-confession, or some other big event. This was more of a natural flow of things.

And really, given that in this show every 1.5-episode period ends with a confession or reconfession, it wouldn't really have had much punch to it anyway.

It's been fun.

So what are our actual odds of a second season? Lower than most series I should think. The animation was obviously not the highest budget I've seen, but I think it's a solid show. Hmmm there was that one other shoujo show that got a second season, but I'm struggling to think of others.

I hope the show does well enough that Natsume's voice actress gets some recognition from it; I can't believe this is her first gig. She's really good at her job.

It's been fun.

[up][up]Are you talking about Chihayafuru?

2nd season happening will probably depend on whether 1st season upped the manga sales (of Tonari) to a significant degree. Ever since I found out that anime dvd sales average 4-5 digits, I've basically thought of animation adaptations as marketing to boost manga sales.

Just saw the anime's ending.

Honestly, I'd have preferred Shizuku's phone call with her mother to close out the season, but they'd only covered up to chapter 16 and that happens at the end of chapter 24, so it makes sense that they didn't do that. Instead they opted for stopping exactly at the end of volume 4.

Good, since continuing at all would have been stupid without more episodes.

[up]You're forgetting that each person buying a full anime in Japan has to spend about six times as much as we do, which ends up bringing in a lot more money than you'd think. Only the best of the best games in Japan reach 6 digits, you know - you can't exactly equate good Japanese numbers to what would be good in the US or Europe.

[up] I do know that anime dvds (in Japan) are muy expensive. What I was referring to was the tendency of (some) anime execs to treat anime as marketing ploy to increase manga sales.

http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=122172 http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-10-09/producer/no-square-enix-anime-lost-money-in-8-years

Taguchi added that it is simple to see how publishers profit from broadcasting television anime. For example, each compiled book of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga costs buyers 420 yen (US$4.70), but once author's fees, printing costs, and paper costs are subtracted, publishers are left with 150 yen (US$1.70) per book. If it takes at least 500 million yen to fund a television anime, the anime has to boost the total manga sales by at least 3.3 million copies to be profitable for the publisher.

Sales of the first Fullmetal Alchemist volume alone jumped from 150,000 copies to 1.5 million copies after the anime aired. Before the second anime series aired, each volume sold about 1.9 million copies, but each volume now sells 2.1 million copies. Taguchi estimates that a total of 4.6 million more Fullmetal Alchemist manga volumes were sold thanks to anime.

[up]Isn't that calculation based on absolutely no income from the anime? No sales, no nothing?

[up] According to:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2012-03-05

It takes years for most animes to make back its production cost via dvd sales and merchandise.

Very few shows are runaway successes. Initial sales are a good indicator of whether a show will make back the Production Committee's investment, but in truth, most shows take several years to break even. One longtime anime executive estimated that, given enough time, a good 70% of all anime eventually turn a profit. This happens over years of TV reruns, back catalog DVD sales, and re-releases internationally. The process is seldom rewarded quickly.

That I do know, but since the above said it took 3.3M sales at ¥150 is ¥495M, which almost covers the ¥500M figure with a single percent left, any sales above that percentage would be in addition to that, and thus turn a profit. I just find the wording and logic odd, I suppose.

Episode 13: Well, what am I supposed to say? It's still adorable, the soundtrack is still fantastic, it gives me a warm feeling, the works. Glad that Yuu-chan got more screentime, I like her a lot. She and Ooshima need their own spinoff story or something. Especially for Ooshima so I don't have to see a Kana Hana character fail at romance.

Caught up with the manga~ It tells me that Yuu-chan deserves more screentime, her romance is hilariously "shojo". Natsume and Sasayan's relationship will be one to watch out for. Haru and Shizuku are still really sweet(heck they've gotten sweeter) and I'm still grieving for Yamaken and Ooshima. Yuuzan's surprisingly weak to girls, and Iyo is a good addition to the cast.

And it looks like we're gonna learn more about the Yoshidas.
