"Strategy? Spacing? I just keep punching until I hit something." - Sol BadguyMay supernatural beings of all sorts bless the translators.
I could have sworn the amount edited was a lot smaller yesterday. Well, I ain't complaining.
Full Battle ModePlayed it and liked it. Awesome facial expressions from Umineko make a comeback and the music is awesome. I'm not sure why it had such a low score on vndb before it got released. Probably something to do with So Short It Sucks.
Anyways, it's a completely different genre from the When They Cry series. It's not a mystery, just a pure supernatural Psychological Horror. Don't expect something meta; just enjoy the story.
Full Battle Modewhich shows Ryukishi can be a good writer even if he does other genres, which is why I'm curious to check Rose Gun Days and see how he will do in a work that seems more action-oriented.
Well that was...tasteless and disturbing. I regret reading it, ugh. The writing was only disturbing because of shock value as opposed to any good horror structure. All in all just not a very enjoyable story for me.

I don't think that Psychological Horrors are supposed to be tasteful. The whole essence of the genre is to see people succumb to their base desires of sex, violence, and power.
I can completely understand if you don't like them.

Full Battle ModeNo, I don't think I was clear enough. What I mean is that the writing didn't quite present the themes well enough. It seemed like a sort of immature psychological horror that's trying to shock its reader instead of actually messing with his head. Good psychological horror makes you wonder about the messed up stuff you are seeing. I like psychological horror. Here it was just...messed up stuff. Just didn't think it was well written at all, honestly.
Currently on chapter 9 (manga) right now. Liking what I'm reading so far. Interested in the very dark approach on ghost stories/scary legends the work is taking.
I'll check dis out
Backloggery MyAnimeListRemember that it has multiple parts. It doesn't tell you, so I made the mistake of thinking it was finished after only playing the first part.
Full Battle ModeJust played the first part of the VN this week. I would say this is an unjustly overlooked part of R7's work, and it wasn't quite as I thought when I read the synopsis a while ago.
I was expecting a purely dark story of gruesome revenge from Marie, but it turned out very different. Most protagonists are actually likeable, Marie and Higanbana's relationship is kind of… funny? Endearing? And my taste for Bittersweet Endings makes me like the conclusion of the stories. There is of course the Nightmare Fuel ending of the fifth story, but outside of that the horror elements stay relatively moderate, and I would say that's a good thing. I tried to read the first chapters of the manga, but the story doesn't work as well for exactly this reason: the scenes and expressions are too exagerated.
The only story I didn't like was the fourth, which seemed a bit pointless, other than serving for a Sakutaro cameo. I mean, Marie talks to Michiru, she understands, cries and promises to stop, and all is well that ends well… it's a bit anti-climactic.
Now admittedly, R7 still has some bad habits in writing, notably a tendency for needless repetition (the discussion about bullies between Yukari and Reiko is especially irritating in that regard). The translation also seems overly literal at times, making some passages a bit hard to read.
I liked the musics. It obviously doesn't reach the level of variety and epicness of When They Cry, but the series atmosphere makes it a bit hard anyway. For that matter, the totally epic music at the end of chapter 5 took me by surprise. Other than that, they do their job well enough, with a few gems (espically the first music during Marie's introduction).

As you might be able to guess from the title, this is 07th Expansion's latest visual novel, Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni. Some of you might have already read the manga and heard about the translation patch for the VN. Here's a preview of the prologue + the OP to the game:
Here's a link to the translators' blog.
