It starts to look like Tomoko gained certain notoriety at her school, and now even people who don't know her very well are to some degree aware of her unsavory nature. And the ending of this chapter might further contribute to this.

The fact that Minami's hopes of making a new friend were crushed in this chapter, and that it might even be harder for her to keep in touch with her old clique, would be actually rather sad... if it weren't for the fact that it all happened to, well, Minami.

Just to clarify things, Japanese schools have no direct equivalent to a school suspension as we know it in Western style schools. Detention either; the word used in the raw instead points to active guidance, where a student has to regularly meet a guidance councillor for a certain period instead of going straight home.

I found a really interesting doujin with the premise being that Yuri calls Tomoko one morning to find 3 other Yuris from different points in time (and thus different points in her relationship with Tomoko).

There's Yuri from the second year field trip, Yuri from the end of the second year, and Yuri from right before the college visit she had with Tomoko. In order for the 3 other Yuris to go back to their point in time, they need to resolve the current issues they're facing. Well...there's a 5th Yuri from the future and the one that actually called Tomoko. The fourth and "present" Yuri needs to resolve her issue and get sent back too.

Oh wow. I didn't realize this doujin was mentioned on Yuri's character page under Characterization Marches On.

New Chapter is out!

The void Tomoko left is felt by all of her friends. This is another one of those chapters where its practically inconceivable it could have occurred in the first half. Also being Emily Ucchi is suffering as usual.

Asuka really felt Tomoko's absence. At this point, her not being interested romantically in Tomoko would be a massive asspull.

[up]Yup.

Although maybe anyone else interested in Tomoko should hope Asuka isn't gay because, lets be honest, no one else is winning if Asuka straightforwardly approaches Tomoko. note

Are those Asuka, Kaho and Fuuka on their first year?

Is from Chapter 57

Chapter 57 was set during Tomoko's second year, not first, and those three are of the same age as Tomoko. I suppose it might be an early appearance of those three, though the first time we definitely see Asuka (in chapter 71) she looks mostly the same way she does now.

EDIT - Also, in a flashback from the chapter where Tomoko and Asuka have their college date younger Asuka was shown to already have her current hair color.

New Chapter!

As expected, it shows what Tomoko and Yoshida have been up to while suspended. Not a lot of stuff happening actually, though it now shows how Yoshida's built up a tolerance for Tomoko, and the latter now misses being around her other friends. Also, that Call me when you're free! from Asuka. What.

Asuka is just getting gayer as the series goes on.

Is wonderful

Someone on reddit made a good case about Tomoko actually being somewhat prejudiced against gay people. And now I can't help but wonder how exactly she does rationalize her growing interest in Asuka, or how she would react if Asuka were to come out as lesbian to her.

The margins mentions Tomomote is coming back. That's interesting consider Kotomi and Yuu have been pretty Out of Focus for a while.

What case need be argued? The translation probably exaggerates it, but the way Tomoko thinks of Mako as being gay has a blatant accusatory tone.

Ikko, the writer, recently was on a radio show where he was interviewed and answered some fans' questions.

Here's the first part's translation

http://watamote.com/internet-radio-show-tanigawa-ikko-appeared-part-1/

And here's a cliff notes of the second part

>When did he decide to change the direction -> after he tried introducing more characters via the 4koma (Tomo Mote?)

>It's hard to come up with character episodes but at the same time not really

>When did Nemo's deal about being a seiyuu and an otaku become a thing? -> He had it in mind lightly from the beginning, but didn't force himself to use that setting then. But it manifests in how Nemo has anime-like hair (he designed Nemo) and the artist added in more details

>While not something especially shared with the artist, every character does have a few character settings in his mind (TN: That's likely why characters are mostly so consistent!)

>Back in highschool he was a moody depressed kid but the delinquents and teacher mistook it as him being a serious student

>Any chapters that (not necessarily Watamote) he particularly likes? -> the Lotte collab one. It was effortless to write.

>Last year in June/July the Lotte Marines were losing so badly and so often he didn't watch them at all

>Do the different personalities between Ikko and Nico affect the manga? -> maybe in some of the actions characters take and smaller details. Sometimes Nico the artist will say that "this character won't say this", but sometimes she'll just go with it. She doesn't really do so for dirty jokes. Ikko jokes that she just ignores them now. Does she do it for Katou? -> yes

>Will it end with graduation? -> Well that'll probably be the case, don't you think?

>Maybe with her getting a boyfriend.... -> (Laughs)

>Any notifications for fans -> not really

There's always been some Lesyay in this series but it's still kind of surreal watching it transform from cringe comedy to basically Yuri harem. Which is rather awkward since I'm not into Yuri.

I absolutely cannot help but adore handsome 2D boys

[up]I used to read this series regularly, but dropped it a while ago, and that shift is part of the reason why. I'm not into "harem" stuff. Besides, I think that Tomoko getting such a large amount of friends and admirers in such a relatively short period of time felt rather contrived. It didn't feel like a natural progression to me.

I preferred the series as a black comedy. Of course, I could have been okay with Tomoko getting friends, I just didn't like the way they did it. Felt way too fanservicey/pandering. But that's just my opinion. Having said that, the original version of the series, as a black comedy, was starting to wear thin. You can only keep that going for so long before it gets old. So, they probably needed to either change the focus, or just end it. Again, I was fine with giving Tomoko friends, I just wish it had happened differently.

As it is, the series just isn't for me anymore. But apparently a lot of other people like it. I guess its sort of like when a musical artist starts off being underground and alternative, but then later changes their sound to be more radio friendly. They become more popular, and alienate some of their old fans, but also gain a lot of new ones. That's just how it goes.

The detention continues but we get to see a bit more ship teasing with Asuka/Tomoko and some sligth Mako/Yoshida.

Yeah, the part with Tomoko's mother at the end was great.

Pretty cute chapter.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I'm starting to get tired of Ucchi schtick. Mainly because at this point it feels like just dragging the joke than actual development. I wouldn't be as bothered if Asuka weren't being used as a foil for Ucchi and literally doing everything Ucchi should be doing (or trying to do). In fact, Asuka gave me "girlfriend" vibes in this chapter with the way she mediated between Tomoko and Ucchi, the attention she gave to Tomoko and the questioning at the end about the lack of a call.

Now about Yuri. Is undeniable that she and Tomoko have great chemistry and their interaction was adorable but at this point I can't really see her feelings towards Tomoko as romantic in nature. Yuri is coming off like being both extremely sheltered and socially awkward, so she's just relieved to be with her BFF again. That's something I've noticed with Yuri for a while, she seems terrified from being alone and becomes real clingy with those few who she considers friends. Ironically, if Nico would've kept the characterization Yuri had during the Kyoto trip then her interest in Tomoko would be 100% romantic.

Akane and Nemo keep slipping into the background while the Yoshi Mako teasing continues.

I'm personally fine with Ucchi, because I enjoy seeing her small steps of progress.

Also literally everything about Asuka continues to be framed as her crushing hard on Tomoko.

The sleepwear art plus the recent maid outfits sure are fanfic and speculation fodder (especially for any future Cultural Fest chapter), but chronologically the next event up is Tanabata. Hmm. Now everyone remember what Tomoko wished for the previous year? cool

Am I the only one thinking that Imae is pretty flat as a character? She never got more characterization beyond token nice girl that worries about everyone and is pretty much perfect in every sense of the word. In many ways, she's the kind of bland, wish-fulfillment character that I've seen many accuse Asuka of being.
