I went there sometime ago, it was wierd. Some guy going by Kojima mostly acting reasonable but not saying anything, lolcelot being Lovecraftian and stuff, then some guy spoutting rhymes...

So, question. Alessa's powers are the source of the Otherworld and the monsters, right?

...so where'd her powers come from?

She's a psychic.

I've only seen that fight scene. Fuck that film.

Short version as I understand it:

As a consequence of her mother performing a ritual involving lighting her on fire and burning her to a charred corpse kept alive only through its supernatural powers, Alessa was impregnated by the demon Samael that the town's cult worshipped. This was the original source of the reality distortion that occurred in Silent Hill.

Alessa was to give birth to Samael, allowing him to spread his influence across the world. However, she was able to use a portion of his power to reach out to Travis Grady. Travis and Alessa were able to obtain a mystical artifact, the Flauros, which they used to imprison Samael. With Alessa now in mostly-full control of Samael's reality-warping abilities, she took control of Silent Hill. She also split her soul, reincarnating herself in the form of the baby that Harry Mason and his wife discovered. Harry named this baby Cheryl.

Seven years passed and, in that time, the cultists were unable to regain control over Alessa because of that missing portion of herself. They underwent a ritual to call out to her missing portion and beckon it to return to Silent Hill. Harry brought Cheryl back to Silent Hill, whereupon the town promptly reached out and reclaimed her in the form of a car crash.

In the process of searching for Cheryl, Harry was manipulated by Alessa's mother Dahlia into reconstructing the Flauros, while Cheryl was reincorporated into Alessa. Once rebuilt, Samael was released and reclaimed his power over the town. Her partner Dr. Kaufmann, however - who absolutely had not signed up for turning the entire world into a demon's playground; he just wanted to make money selling drugs - was able to use the exorcising substance aglaophotis to expel Samael from Alessa's body. The incomplete demon had yet to achieve his full power and Harry subsequently murdered it to death with bullets. This left a dying Alessa in control of the reality warping power.

Alessa used the last of her power to reincarnate herself again into a new baby and entrusted herself to Harry. Harry took the baby and escaped Silent Hill to raise her anew - as of her most recent appearance, she is simultaneously 17, 24, and 31. This left nobody in control of the reality-warping power that had grown in Silent Hill, so it collapsed into a psychic vacuum with no conscious will of its own, attracting people with emotional trauma and bending to their subconscious guilts, resentments, and fears.

But because it's all sourced from Alessa's possession, a trace of her psyche still exists in every manifestation. Their form shifts depending on the person whose mind is being made real, but you will always find Alessa's fear of dogs, her nurses, and her out-of-place hospital elements like wheelchairs and IV drips somewhere.

I thought she was psychic before the ritual.

She might have been. I only know the first Silent Hill game second-hand.

Yeah, she was psychic to begin with. i was wondering why that was, since everyone else is the series seems to be normal.

I mean, this series shares a setting with Metal Gear maybe. Based on a handful of references.

That series has psychics.

There was always something magical about Silent Hill. It was considered sacred by the Native population before Europeans arrived, and quickly became a small if popular resort town. Despite, y'know, the genocides, the Civil War prison camps, the cult, ect. It seems to be less the tourism industry and instead magic making people like it. The ritual preformed on Alessa just made it into what it is now (again, though, most people don't go into the Otherworld or even the foggy world. Its still populated.)

So people and places have powers in the Silent Hill universe, but tend to be relatively dormant (Heather has Alessa's powers but only seems to use precognition.)

I haven't played the first game but I've read that Samael was just a bunch of BS Dahlia told Harry. The god of the cult is just called "God" or other titles, but is unnamed. Also that God was the one who reincarnated Alessa to save itself, not Alessa. Not sure about either, though. (Looked like one of the incarnations of God, though.) Hence why (IIRC) Heather was supposed to hear a baby crying at the end of SH 3.

There's not a lot we can do.

I mean, like, I have no plans to put money into any of Konami's pachinko machines, but I don't live in Japan so it's not like they'll feel the loss.

I'm glad him and Koji seem to remain on good terms. Ah, how I wish for their vision to come to life in some way. Probably won't.

I should go see Crimson Peak. And I need to watch his older films.

I've only played SH 1 and watched playthroughs of Shattered Memories (Which hit me hard) and Homecoming (which hit me hard in a different way).

SH 1 was an... unnerving experience.

We're gonna burn Konami's house down with the lemons?

No but depending on how you look at it someone only ended up half dead or someone else was born.

I still maintain that Shattered Memories happened in-canon. <.<

Because of the twist at the end, I like to think that it was Silent Hill attempting to reclaim Heather after the events of 3. Dr. Kaufmann the psychiatrist was the actual Dr. Kaufmann from Silent Hill 1, who was last seen being dragged into oblivion by Lisa Garland. Now possessed by the power in Silent Hill, his purpose under the guise of psychiatric treatment is to facilitate the rewriting of Heather's memories, reframing Harry in a more negative light and Dahlia as Awesome McCoolMom.

The Harry construct we play as throughout the game is Heather subconsciously exerting her control over the power in Silent Hill to fabricate a construct that can break her free, in the form of the one person who's always been there for her even after death.
