Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I know, right. It's so wacky and lovable. tongue

Heck, it's blatantly obvious that Peter convinces Ray and Egon to start the Ghostbusters because he thinks they can scam the hell out of people by promising to trap ghosts. You could make the point that, by dissing Walter Peck, he indirectly causes Gozer to get released — or at least accelerates the timeline.

Venkman is such an over-the-top asshole that it's amazing we root for him at all.

Ah the...... wait which decade was this?

Amazing how things have changed in such short years.

To think the various forms of misogyny in Revenge of the Nerds wasn’t creepy & fucked at all back then.

I’m willing to bet plenty of women were horrified when Revenge of the Nerds came out. There’s film criticism from the 1970s and 1980s criticizing George Lucas for having almost no women or people of color in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Speak for yourself. didn't root for him back then, and do it even less now that I actually understand what roofies are.

You know, one of the "arguments" against Captain Marvel is that it is a comic which has been rebooted repeatedly. I just say: No wonder considering what BS the (male) writers did to Carol Danvers. So let's hope that a female writing team does a better job. At the very least they won't think that mind rape is something you can just wave away.

Makes me wonder if John Belushi's take on Venkman (or for that matter, Richard Pryor, both men were considered for the role) would have been any different,,but anyway, this thread is derailing, soooo,,Am I the only one who thinks that a tv series based off Sleepwalker (and set in the MCU of course) could work? If anything, you could even put it on Disney's new streaming service.

Being fair to Star Wars Return of the Jedi/Empire strikes back did eventually include a black characters like Lando,I suspect the reason they didn't have any in the first film was that it was a massive gamble and it may have been hard to convince many black actors to sigh on to the project so Lucus stuck to people he knew which was mostly white actors

[up][up] How about using him in a Midnight sons show? This way they can use the Ghostrider as jump-off point….

Sleepwalker is simultaneously too weird to be marketed to as a superhero series, but too conventional to be marketed as a "trippy" series either. He'd work best as a supporting character or a guest star on another character's show, like Ghost Rider or Blade.

Not to mention the fact that Venkman blew off an actual, real psychic to try and get his dick wet.

Yeah, Venkman being an all-around horrible person is a big reason I don’t enjoy the original Ghostbusters and have trouble understanding how it got so popular.

I watched Indiana Jones’ series for the first time ever recently and among the various things I liked and disliked about the series, I noticed how strongly Lucas particularly latched onto the male power fantasy of pulp comics genre - it and the completely unchanged racial problems are even more visible there than in Star Wars. Lucas’ attachment to it probably a strong reason why those problems are so prevalent in the many, many fandoms his work has touched and influenced ever since: he didn’t invent it, but he did codify it for action movies and sci-if and so on

Marvel is reporting seeking an "openly gay actor" for a lead role in Eternals. I wonder if they are making a character gay and thus want to avoid controversy by casting an LGBT actor? Also, I nominate Vincent Rodriguez III.

I just checked what a roofie is, and ummmmmmmmmm, huh.

Huh.

Well, I guess it's a good thing the only 80's comedy I watched was Back To The Future, which is relatively free of fucked up stuff as far as I can remember.

Yes, it's a bit... odd that Peter arrives for his date with Dana with a powerful sedative. He didn't prepare in advance for his girlfriend to be possessed by a demon, so what exactly is he planning to do with it? [lol]

No, it really wasn't. More people may acknowledge how bad it is now, but it was still bad then, too.
