Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

In terms of Marvel movies last year, Infinity War, Ant-Man and The Wasp, and even Venom had better special effects than Black Panther. Black Panther's strengths were in its ensemble cast, costuming and set design, music, and cultural impact, not special effects.

Hela comes to the BAFT As red carpet wearing the Infinity Stones.

It looks like Thanos did try to impress her but that quickly backfired.

She's wearing eight square gemstones of various colors.

I don't think those are actually supposed to be the Infinity Gems. Because they're perfect squares. And there's eight of them.

I think it's just a cool dress.

[up]Well, I'd say the timing of her wearing such stones (after the Infinity Stones were super important and she just did a movie for Marvel and Disney) would mean it's meant to be something of a reference, but it's not really something to argue over.

The fact there's an extra one would possibly mean she's not intending for people to think she's wearing pretend stones, so there's enough for anyone who disagrees to continue to do so.

[up] Nope, a particularly strong one. But two of the nominated movies where non-American productions, so it boiled down to HTTYD II or Big Hero 6. My favourite was Song of the Sea, but unlike others, I can acknowledge that the high level of animation in Big Hero 6 combined with the examination of a very heavy subject makes it a worthy winner.

Hmmmh should have given it to Dragons or someone else then.

Big Hero wasn’t bad movie but it was pretty average on all fronts.

Should have been the LEGO Movie.

No. There were four movies which were overall better than the Lego Movie.

But we are getting off-topic here.

The CG for Black Panther only looked rough during the last 10 minutes. Up until then it was good.

And I’d rather have good story over good CG. Being able to see the pores on Thanos’s face means nothing to me.

And a good story can be ruined by bad CG.

Luckily BP's wasn't that bad but it was wonkey enough to take some people out of it.

Marvel and Hulu are making four new animated shows which include MODOK, Hit-Monkey, the Tigra & Dazzler Show, and Howard the Duck, all of which will culminate with a special called The Offenders.

...Yes, I know none of them will take place in the MCU, but still, I thought I should post this here. Because they are making a GODDAMN HOWARD THE DUCK SHOW. AND MODOK. AND...Dazzler & Tigra?

Here are the actual synopses:

  • M.O.D.O.K. centers around an egomaniacal supervillain with a really big head and a really little body, who struggles to maintain control of his evil organization and his demanding family. Writers Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt will also executive produce.

  • Hit-Monkey tells the tale of a wronged Japanese snow monkey, mentored by the ghost of an American assassin, as he cuts a wide swath through the Tokyo underworld in this darkly cinematic and brutally funny revenge saga. Writers Josh Gordon and Will Speck will executive produce.

  • Tigra & Dazzler Show is a story about two woke superheroes and best friends, Tigra and Dazzler, as they fight for recognition among powered people who make up the eight million stories in Los Angeles. Writers Erica Rivinoja and Chelsea Handler serve as executive producers.

  • Howard the Duck is trapped in a world he never made, but America’s favorite fighting fowl hopes to return home with the help of his unstoppable gal pal Beverly before the evil Dr. Bong can turn him the crispiest dish on the menu. Writers Kevin Smith and Dave Willis will also executive produce.

  • The Offenders follows MODOK, Dazzler, Tigra, Hit Monkey and Howard the Duck as they are all forced to team up in order to save the world and certain parts of the universe.

Yes, Patton Oswalt and Kevin Smith are both involved with this.

Sigh... one more sign that we’re probably never going to get a serious adaptation of MODOK.

I’m all the way here for Hit-Monkey and Howard the Duck series, though.

[up][up]Hey, never say never — we have Howard the Duck in the MCU after all — but it is going to pretty hard considering that, uh, he's mainly known for having a giant head and tiny body.

The LEGO Movie was the best animated film of that year, bar none. Completely blew all other contenders out of the water, nothing else even came close.

On topic: I don't believe it. I literally don't believe that they will make a show starring MODOK. I won't believe it even if it gets a trailer. I won't believe it if it gets released. I will think it's all one big sick joke, even if the show gets rave reviews and is renewed for a second season. It's simply not happening. They will not make a show starring MODOK, they just simply won't.

[up][up]If you've never read the Howard the Duck comics, you need to read the Howard the Duck comics. Either the original 1970s ones by Steve Gerber or the 2010s ones by Chip Zdarsky. Both are awesome.

Problem is, those last 10 minutes were the climax of the film. It is the one part you don't wanna screw it up...and they screw it up.

[up]x3 sigh my to-read list never gets any smaller.
