02 is a hot mess that could easily be forgotten.
They barely tried to pretend the 02 Cast existed. So it feels like a mandate from above it stays canon even as they do as much as possible to erase the Davis and them from existence.

They want to use Adventure cast because of nostalgia and popularity, nothing more. They're clearly still part of continuity and the 'verse in Tri.
So not that different from 02 itself
At the end they wanted nostalgia but also went out of their way to act like those characters don't exist. Which I mean, seeking nostalgiabucks and removing things some feel nostalgialovers would hate is completely valid mindset.
Like the new Ducktales removing everything old Webby was to the point they canonically have a Webby doll thats stabbed in the gut to a wall while the new Webby has a character that isn't solely "female child duck".

I want to comment on that whole thing I have with Atsushi Maekawa. I heard that Ken and Eas (From Fresh Pretty Cure) both used the japanese phrase for "It wasnt supposed to be like this!".
EDIT:The Digimon Survive trailer scared me. Pleasent music...then suddenly DEATH AND DANGER LOL.

After the bullshit they pulled with Tri, I expect them to pull out a bullshit excuse to keep the 02 kids out of the action again.
It's really funny how this movie series made me flip on those guys. Before, I wouldn't have cared as much, but the fact that the best they could come up with was they got beat up right at the start and no one cared...it should be funny for everyone who hates 02 (and I mean, some people probably did get a laugh) but it was so painfully lazy too.
It doesn't help that I actually wanted to see what their designs for this series was.

Ooh, this should be interesting.
That said, I've been working on my own various Digimon. Super Evolutions of the Dark Masters, based upon the Xros Wars style, well, for ones like Omni Shoutmon. Hit a tiny snag when Metal Seadramon was pretty much like that, but for Mega Seadramon, respectively.
So far, I got a decent amount done. Oricha Puppetmon is completely done bar a physical image. Geld Machinedramon has a lot of work done, including attacks. Doublo Seadramon is being worked on, but has some good ideas down. Finally, Valor Piedmon has a bit done, at least for the concept design. Again, no physical images. I might have Doublo Seadramon done first via an easier to work with sprite, though.
The thing is, we have absolutely no reason to believe the epilogue won't be followed
It was canon when 02 aired, nothing has changed as of yet.
