Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Nah, they'll just blame that on Moore being a sexual predator. Which means they'll vet future candidates to ensure they don't get more sexual predators.
Which TBH is still pretty good.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIf a pro-life candidate is the only one that has any chance of winning then they're a lesser evil to outright losing, lets not forget that a tepid pro-lifer who votes with the Democratic Party 80% of the time is a very different beast from a fiery pro-lifer (a la Pence or Cruz) who votes with the party 0%.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnNPR and Washington Post also have called the election for Doug Jones.
Hubris, is a glorious thing.
Watch SymphogearIt's an unusual election. They'll just find an excuse to push Moore away and cite him as a particularly unfit candidate to represent their party, like they were clamoring for after the allegations first came out, before backing down like cowards.
@smokeycut: Agreed. Which is why I maintain my position - we can allow pro-life Democrats if they're willing to be honest about it and not engage in or tolerate the bullshit, such as the fetus-farming myth, "reversible abortion," fake abortion clinics and shit like that.

Sweet Home Alabama?
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonFox News has just called it for Doug Jones!
We did it! We kept Moore out! Huzzah!
That's also true. I'd prefer a pro-choice candidate, but if it ultimately comes down to a pro-life Democratic candidate vs. a pro-life Republican candidate...I'd still vote for the Democratic candidate.

Disgusted, but not surprised@M84: Exactly. Even if the only lesson they take from this is 'Moore was a shit candidate', then that stills makes them less likely to support people like him, which is itself a turn away from the crazy.
ROLL MOTHERFUCKING TIDE!
New Survey coming this weekend!CNN officially calling it fuck yes
PSN ID: FateSeraph | Switch friendcode: SW-0145-8835-0610 Congratulations! She/TheyI still expect crazy candidates. Just not any more child molester candidates.
Which as I've said before, is still a plus.

Disgusted, but not surprisedYes, what I imagine is more likely to happen is that they'll dial back from far-right, explicitly racist/antisemitic/etc candidates like Moore and Trump, which is a net positive even if the bar is that low.
I'm in shock.
We did it.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Thought: The Democrats need to bring up the Republican support of Moore, the pedophile, and remind people of it at every opportunity. THAT is the kind of thing I meant by "playing dirty".
EDIT: Well, if we're getting consensus on Jones winning, GOOD.

Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted.Well then, to anyone who did work in Alabama: congratulations and thank you.

Wait, Jones actually won?
Well then.
Playing dirty is outright making shit up. Pointing out that your opponent has said and done and supported awful things? That's a public service.

Disgusted, but not surprisedCongrats, America. You guys didn't elect a pedophile.
Wanna bet that Bannon and friends are still going to run Moore-tier candidates, but in less red states?
Also, can't wait for Trump's coming Twitter meltdown.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Where's that troper who was on the Jones campaign team? I wanna give you the biggest Internet hug in the world.
"And kung fu is a terrible way to run a company" - alliteratorCongrats to Games And Tropes and everyone else in Alabama who worked their asses off for Doug Jones' campaign. You did a good job!
@Dragh: Surely them losing in Alabama is a sign of exactly that happening.
