Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In addition to that being... morally flawed, it's just plain counterproductive. Listening to people like that is not a thing politicians are known to do- indeed, standing firm in their stances against threats like that tend to gain them support.
Plus it's friccken' Heller, who, as things stand, is the most likely person to cast the deciding vote. It's the place where we can afford that kind of fuckery the least. If it had been some rank-and-file senator from a super red state, it'd still be shitty, but we could at least say 'well, they were definitely going to vote for it anyway, so at least it's not really affecting anything'. But here? Can you imagine if Heller decides 'strongman who doesn't give in to death threats' is the image he wants in 2018, and this makes him vote Yes? And if that makes BCRA pass?
Who's to say the crazy guy is a leftist? Wasn't the bill deeply unpopular among all parties?
Could be a False Flag Operation by the right.
Unfortunately cases like this are probably inevitable. Desperate humans are apt to do stupid things and if it's life and death on the line even more so.
At some point you can only shake your head sadly/angrily and ask "well what the fuck did you expect?"
Aparently the WH made at Stament about Venezuela saying maduro is a bad leader who want to be a dictator.
....i dont really know how to feel right now
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Ah, Republicans, the party of projection

Well... that is just peak Republican. The projection is off the charts...
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnDon't tempt fate.
It is a bit like calling something "foolproof", in that it only guarantees someone fool enough to defy expectations will turn up
I check out and yep, the WH said the people of venezuela show a desire for free election and democracy but Maduro ignore it because is a bad leader with aspiration of dictatorship....
I use this to repeat to all people here from the states that chavismos is pretty much trumpism before it was mainstrain, so you can get a clue or two of trum behivor from us
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not", That is...rather terrifying and a good point.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnSo, I see by Twitter trends that we are now in fact a few weeks into hurricane season (with Tropical Storm Don forming in the Caribbean but unlikely to make an impact though the irony would be palpable if it did). We still don't have a head of FEMA, do we?
@Unkowing: Honestly, the collapse of globalized trade and the rise of neo-mercantalism may be unavoidable, with or without Trump. Free trade is only viable with a unipolar hegemony or certain bi-polar configurations. The decline of British hegemony in the early 20th century led to increasingly protectionist trade policies, and as a consequence of those policies and other poor decision by policymakers, the great depression.
This is probably him continuing with his line that online companies like Amazon don't pay sales tax, despite anyone who's has shopped on amazon knowing for a fact that this isn't true. And the comment likely is just a continuation of his feud with Jeff Bezos.

POLITICO BREAKING NEWS: Sens. Lee, Moran oppose Senate's Obamacare bill, killing it in current form
07/17/17 8:40 PM EDT (expires: 07/17/17 9:40 PM EDT) GOP Sens. Mike Lee and Jerry Moran said on Monday evening they won't vote to advance the Senate's Obamacare repeal bill, killing the bill in its current form. The vote has been indefinitely delayed following a surgery on Sen. John Mc Cain.
If that's true, then the BCRA is once and for all dead.
And it's starting to look like the House's Budget will also die, as the Freedom Caucus is saying they won't support the Budget until they know what the Tax Reform plan is. Keep in mind, the House is still going on vacation in August, so... We may be facing a Republican-Caused Government Shutdown (again)...
I'll call Trump's Venezuela statement a stopped clock moment. And speaking of stopped clocks, apparently Netanyahu told Macron he doesn't believe Trump's interested in pushing for a solution to the I-P conflict (source was Haaretz, can't find article right now).

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnHow much would this affect any Government jobs? Because I work at the DMV with the MN Department of Public Health and Safety, so if I'm at risk at getting forced unpaid vacation because of Republican BS, I'd like to know.

That's state government, not federal. Unless Minissota is also having a budget fight, you're clear.
The DMV is generally a state thing unless something's gone awry where you are.
Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesSo would the shutdown affect say, the Pentagon or the FCC?

My question is: if the GOP shuts down the government whilst being a majority in every body, can it really keep going as a single party?
