Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, you've certainly invited a hornet's nest. But if they can mobilize (decent) people, more power to them.
Right now, I'm personally more concerned about the Democrats voting in favor of Trump's cabinet picks. I'd like to think they could stand unified against a near universally disastrous selection, so the ones who confirm his picks would be the first ones I'd put under a microscope.

This was a pretty big factor into why I decided to buy into what Cenk was saying there.
I'm disturbed that so many Democrat leaders were cool with Pompeo.
"You can't change the world without getting your hands dirty."Hope they don't let that viper Tulsi Gabbard have any significant influence...
As for the Democrats voting in favor of Pompeo: the most charitable explanation is that they don't want Trump to pick someone even worse. Which is probably why some went along with Tillerson — better him than say, Bolton.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI mean, Bernie voted to confirm both Mattis and the new Homeland Security Secretary (both curiously former Marines), so even the face of the revolution has to cover his ass
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies. There is also the desire to avoid being seen as the "Herbal Tea Party".
For a supposed dove, Bernie has a...complicated relationship with the military industrial complex.

Disgusted, but not surprisedMattis was confirmed almost unanimously, and I assume the DHS was similar? The tracker I found doesn't list the details. But this just raises further questions, and I don't exactly find that encouraging.
Plus those kinds of regional issues will likely keep cropping up, like "more conservative and politically vulnerable Democrats like Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia" could support the EPA nominee.

Maybe because Mattis is the sanest of the bunch. Certainly better than some of the other monstrosities that have been nominated.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo what you do think the chances are of Trump rage-quitting the presidency?
It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.none. That would be admitting to weakness.
none whatsoever, because that would be something that is overall good for the world, and no modern-day Republican is capable of even thinking of doing such a thing.
I'm only asking because given:
- How much Trump hates his legitimacy as a leader being undermined
- How much just that is going to happen over the next four years
I've been wondering if Trump would just say "Screw it, I can't take this anymore, I hate all of you".
It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.I don't see that happening. Too much money to be had.
I would be more likely that the constant stress of the presidency will kill him before he quits.
Inter arma enim silent legesWell, if his presidency goes pear shaped (major disaster being mismanaged and everybody complaining about him, an unsuccessful war etc.), then and only then could I see the evil dog rage quitting.

(Either skip the Dutch part at the beginning, or switch on the English subtitles.)
Thought you guys might find it funny.
You mean quit as in "quit before he gets his butt impeached?" You mean a Nixon quit?
Hell, yeah.
You know, I've been talking for a while about the fear of a genuine massacre happening under Trump. If it does, the Dakota Access Pipeline and the water protectors seems like a pretty likely place. They were already using potentially lethal force and brutality against them, and that was under Obama. What happens when Trump hears that there's a bunch of Indians defying him who won't get out of his way?
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."The biggest media boon to the keystone protestors was the arrival of the veteran group. Unfortunately Trump doesn't hold veterans in the same light, if past comments are anything to go by.
Oh, and more good news - I'm seeing rumors that the Muslim immigration ban may be coming today. Not sure what that means, but Christ. All the people in the self-proclaimed Resistance, including myself - time to put up or shut up.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Ugh, it's been less than a week and Trump is already setting the stage for a potential massacre.
Disgusted, but not surprisedOh, and it keeps coming. Republicans seem to be looking into various ways of sticking to blue states while boosting red states, mainly through tax dollars and Medicaid funding.
I wonder if people are starting to get it yet. We can't fight the GOP just by playing the same game we always have. The moment we start to win, they will change the rules.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."They're going to declare a state of emergency just to do that? What the fuck is this, Gambia?
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotIt certainly isn't a democracy, that's for sure.
Everybody's saying things like "man it's going to be a long four years" like all of this is just going to magically change in four years. Anybody else notice that Trump and his Death Eaters have been saying "eight years" with complete confidence?
They have no intention of losing the next election, voters be damned. And they have the tools to ensure that.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Trump has already come up with his 2020 slogan: "Keep America Great!"
I know TYT is controversial with some posters here but this was a good video:
He even got me fired up to donate to their "Justice Democrats" wing that's partnering with Bernie's team and Secular Talk to elect strong democratic candidates across the country.
He also goes into a bit of history about when and why Democrats started to become weak during the 70's/80's.
