Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's probably fair to note that, of the higher-trafficked subreddits, there was also r/gendercritical (transphobia) and r/ConsumeProduct (anti-semitic). The two highest political subreddits were r/The_Donald and r/chapotraphouse

r/Darkhumorcentral was also banned, it was pretty much a neo-nazi joke sub.
r/ChapoTrapHouse also got the axe and good riddance to them.

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.I guess you could make the argument that at least they did it at all...
You could but you really shouldn't, they shouldn't get kudos for doing the barest minimum after letting it fester. If they had opposed bigotry from day 01 then that would be one thing, but they shouldn't get credit for solving a problem that they helped cause.

Watch me destroying my countryOne thing to note regarding Roberts' agreeing with the liberal judges on the abortion ruling was that he did so primarily because of how the court ruled in a nigh-identical case when Breyer was still on the court - different State, identical law requiring abortion providers to have admittance privileges at a nearby hospital. In different circumstances, he's more likely to rule the opposite, especially since he was in the dissent in the prior case, while Kavanaugh's predecessor was in the majority.
I think the idea there is that he'd keep it legal - but he wouldn't necessarily have compunctions about letting States make it more difficult to have done.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Didn't Collins vote in favour of Kavanaugh on the grounds that she was satisfied he'd protect abortion law's 'settled status'?
We all knew it was a matter of time before this would be proven wrong. Now we know how much time.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Roberts seems like he was mainly doing needle threading, he has his views and what he wants to push, but to so brazenly overturn a relatively recent precedent would be huge and would have major political ramifications for the court.
I’ve got to admire Roberts’ commitment to avoiding Dems packing the court should they win in November, he knows that he has very little moral authority left and he’s going to cling onto it for dear life.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranCome to think of it, I suppose he might order his staff to prepare a huge batch of bills and E Os so he can ceremonially kick them off on January 21, but that doesn't mean any of those things will happen that quickly. It'll take years... maybe decades... to clean up all of Trump's messes.
Fighteer, even I think that that's just a little cynical. Remember the 111st Congress (2008-2010)? They had a tripartite majority, and Obama, Pelosi and Reid together got shit done. DREAM. PPACA. The Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (closing a major loophole that was making equal pay lawsuits impossible). Dodd-Frank. I could go on.
Biden has his flaws, but he's an experienced legislator and veep. Now is the time for him to set out his goals and agenda so that, while Trump is being escorted out of the White House claiming that he won in Real America, he can move in and start getting those Day 1 bills moving even if they won't all be accomplished.
I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own. Also to add my own two cents here the actual point should really be to maximise disruption across the GOP holdovers and not to score a fantasy land all clear.

Liberty, equity, autonomy ! Proud neoliberal cuckservative whore ! Now for sale !Remember that the new congress sits before the new president is sworn in, so if democrats can get majorities in both chambers of Congress they technically could have bills ready for signing on day one. That does require full agreement on what goes in the bill to be reached pretty quickly, but the democrat caucus is a lot more unified than it was in 2008.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranMaybe a bit off topic, but what is/who are Chapo Trap House?
Also, apologies if this has been posted before, but speaking of campaign promises, Biden apparently told his donors that he would get rid of Trump's tax cuts "and a lot of you may not like that."

Subreddit infested with tankies, basically Tankie Central
Watch me destroying my countryMy understanding is that it was a sub based around some show or podcast or something, it quickly became Tankie central on reddit for harassment, doxing and possibly actual planning of violence, thus the ban.

Optimism is a duty.People who support authoritarian brutality and colonialism as long as it’s done by a country opposing the US.
It comes from when the USSR used tanks to crush socalist rebellion against soviet backed regimes in Eastern Europe, some in the west cheered for the Soviets.
Nowadays it covers supporters of not just nominally leftist regimes but also things like Assad apologists, Iran enthusiasts and similar.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranI'm not sure if we talked about this, Fox News reporter says an anonymous Republican told them Trump might drop out of the race if his poll numbers don't improve.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I'd love to believe that would be possible but I sincerely doubt it.
Sounds like hot air, just not sure who exactly is blowing it.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It depends on just how much he wants to save face, I think, and whether that outweighs his lust for power and his fear of post-presidency retributions.
Optimism is a duty.Idiot that he is, Trump must be worried about legal issues. Mueller's report alone all but said that he'd be charged had he not been President.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It's one of those things I wouldn't be too surprised when they happen, but only then. Before that time it's just an unconfirmed rumor and I see no point to investing any significant amount of energy in caring about it.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnI agree. It does kind of make sense that he'd want to avoid a humiliating electoral loss by stepping down on his own terms, but I also don't see the point in reading too much into this. If it happens, it happens.
I guess you could make the argument that at least they did it at all...
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."
