Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Welcome to the club.
That said, is there a possibility, even if it's a really small one, that this disaster of a decision, can be stopped and overruled before it's too late?
No, foreign policy is one of the few matters the President has actual direct executive control over.
Oh really when? Then that part needs to be changed promptly as soon as possible.
And in that case, the blood of the kurds and the resurgence of ISIS will be on his tiny hands.
War decisions should absolutely not be left to a cowardly man who dodged the draft multiple times by faking a medical condition and have zero experience in the matter. Seriously, that is just nuts.
What else can be done to save the kurds from this madness and incoming disaster?

A federal judge has dismissed Trump's efforts to block an NY Grand Jury from seeing his tax returns.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It says something when even Trump's Republican allies advised against him pulling away from the Kurds in favor of Turkey. Disastrous, and the rise of Assad and ISIS would directly be his fault.
Left to Trump's hands no, to the President's probably yes.
The solution is not to strip powers from the office of the President, it already has very few.
The solution is to vote him out.
As for the Kurds, the matter is settled unfortunately.

Oh really when?Everyone mildly aware of the region would say the same. It says a lot when even Republicans don't want this.
The reputation of USA is gone

Watch me destroying my countryWould critically severe international sanctions on Turkey have any effect to discourage them from a massive slaughter?
Probably but that's not up to the US, that's up to the rest of the international community.
Oh really when?Stripping control of the military and foreign policy establishment from the president is a bad idea.
The whole reason we have both an executive and a legislature is because they both have strengths and weaknesses. An executive is quick, but can make a bad choice. A legislature is more likely to make a good choice, but very slow moving. Things like warmaking and foreign policy are left in the hands of the executive because they require some agility.
Unfortunately it’s now a sealed deal with the Kurds. The real question is what comes next.

They should have sent a poet.Let's be honest, the US has a history of bailing on people in the Middle East - they've been as committed to stability in the region as Trump is to his marriage(s).

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.(staring silently into space)
How many Kurds are at risk at becoming "casualties" from this disaster at the hands of Turkey?
That's entirely in Erdogan's hands at this point, and if his past history with the people of Kurdistan is anything to go by, it's going to be bloody.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.Huh, look at that, Lindsey Graham actually stated that he would have Congress call for Turkey to be expelled from NATO and hit the country with sanctions if they struck the Kurds down.
...
That actually surprised me.
EDIT: The first one would fall straight into Russia's favor though...

Graham, who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said, "We will introduce bipartisan sanctions against Turkey if they invade Syria and will call for their suspension from NATO if they attack Kurdish forces who assisted the U.S. in the destruction of the ISIS Caliphate."
"Hope and expect sanctions against Turkey — if necessary — would be veto-proof," Graham added. He said he'd just spoken with Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen, who was on board.
Graham has excoriated Trump's abrupt decision to withdraw US troops from northeastern Syria, abandoning Kurdish forces and opening the door for a Turkish military invasion.

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.Nikki Haley also denounced this move.
And at this point, Turkey is a Russian ally. Removing them from NATO would do less damage overall.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Yeah, they’re no longer an ally.
Incirlik should be closed down ASAP. Frankly I’d be shocked if there were still B61s stored there. That would be a major issue.
They should have sent a poet.Yeah, the whole point for Turkey on NATO was to serve as a buffer with Russia, but if Turkey is gonna be Russia's ally anyway, then they get out of NATO.
Watch me destroying my countryI believe its been appealed and a stay on turning over the docs is in place at this time
Is that the end of it then?
I guess, after a night of pillaging and raping, a Viking wants a little something to go with his cocoa.Unless that Mnuchin decides to throw a obstructive illogical tantrum about it on Trump's demand or Trump ordering his staff to send the documents into the shredder out of pure spite, yes, it seems so.
Every success against Trump turns out to be completely meaningless.

Yeah. You're right, I'm just...worried. Not just for the world but also for...myself.
