Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Not too surprised by minorities backing Biden according to that poll. He was Obama's VP.

Apparently the Mc Cain family has endorsed Biden. I am 0% surprised.

Eh, endorsing a Democrat is a point in their favor. Not a massive one but at least they're opposing Trump.

I'm not sure it's a point in Biden's favour, though. Potentially it might even hurt his chances in the primary.

I don't know, he's already running as the Moderate candidate who can appeal to Republicans. I think that would boost his cred amongst Democrats who are primarily considered with electability, the ones who it won't impress (such as quite a few people in this thread, including me) weren't going to support him anyway.

Speaking of Republican defections, a longtime state legislator in Iowa has crossed the aisle, explicitly referring Trump's bad behavior.

Hard to take seriously, given how bad Trump has been for so long. Had he done this in say, 2017, it might have meant more. Here's hoping that Midwestern voters keep turning away instead.

Generally, Biden is a lot more popular in the public than in people who are interested in the specifics of candidate's records. But I've mentioned repeatedly how he's not my candidate and yet how I think he's going to be the likely winner.

I much prefer Harris and Bernie but I see a lot of people gravitating to him as the "uncontroversial" choice.

And yes, I get the irony that the man behind Anita Hill's treatment is that.

All i'm going to say that even if the democrats lose they could still take the senate and keep the house, they can then lameduck Trump's presidency just like they did with Bush

Then 4 years later they can elect a fresh young face to president such as they did with Obama

right, right executive orders, the thing is,even those have to follow the Constitution, and by extension Congress, and if both houses are occupied by Democrats he won't be making many executive decisions, not while they're proceeding to impeachment proceedings

Taking the senate but not the presidency seems very unlikely, the senate is probably a bit harder to take due to the map that’s up. Democrats would have to win three senate seats in states they’d loose for the presidency, plus defeat two republican incumbents in states they’d win.

Edit: I just checked, and the only even semi-viable map where Dems loose the presidency but win the senate (with states voting the same way for both), involves Dems loosing WI, MI and PA but winning Arizona, Iowa and North Carolina (alongside Colorado and Maine).

Edit edit: Actually even that doesn’t work, as MI has a Democrat Senator currently.

The Republican Senate map isn't a good one for them though.

The democrats have a lot wind in their sails, they just need to be steer their ships carefully and not crash on any rocks or sail into kracken infested waters..

Arizona was won by 2% in a year where the Democrats won the popular vote by 8.6%, so you’d be looking at Dems winning the popular vote by about 7% yet loosing the presidency. That’s be over three times the margin of victory that Hillary got but somehow still a loss.

That extra 4% required to win Arizona would if applied evenly to 2016 have resulted in Hillary winning, MI, PA, WI, FL, NE-2, AZ and NC. An electoral college win of 334 to 204.

Yeah, if the Dems take Senate, the White House is almost assuredly going their way as well.

I know, and as I said in 2018 we won the popular vote massively, to win Arizona again we’d likely need to win the popular vote by that much (ish) again, it’s incredibly unlikely we’d win the popular vote by that much but somehow loose the presidency.

Remember yesterday's conversation about whether or not William Barr's Department of Justice would uphold legal actions by the House?

From today's WTFJH feed:

4/ The Justice Department refused to comply with a congressional subpoena for a Trump administration official to testify about the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. The House Oversight and Reform Committee is investigating the addition of the citizenship question despite evidence that it could lead to millions of people being undercounted. John Gore's refusal to appear before the committee is at the direction of Attorney General William Barr. Gore is the principal deputy assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's civil rights division.

It begins.

Last I heard, the citizenship question was struck down in courts. Is that still the case?
