Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So they're not biased basically,if it's law enforcement their interest is primarily in arresting people who've committed crimes and law enforcement has a habit of picking on certain groups of people

Trade wars are a bad idea? Who knew? Aside from, oh I dunno, every fucking economist worth their salt?
Disgusted, but not surprisedIsn't Congress able to stop any tariffs that Cheeto Benito puts up? Because if so, then we might be able to do something about that come January. Or do you need the Senate for that too?
Yeah, all the wrecking the US and the UK did are starting to show effects. That was utterly predictable, but I think it is not the only reason why there is a possible recession looming.
Question: This "second choice if both candidates are under 50% rule" which was used in Maine, is it also relevant in New York and Texas? Also, how by is the chance the Hyde-Smith's behaviour will ruin her run-off chance? And is there any chance to overturn the "we don't count those votes because they were 2 minutes to late for the arbitrary timeline" decision?
Oh, and regarding the Avenatti case: Like I said, listen to the victim. Or the alleged victim in this case. His second wife says that not only was he never violent against her, she wasn't even in his apartment when the alleged incident supposedly happened. And his first wife has come forward to and made it perfectly clear that he never was anything but a loving husband (which wouldn't necessarily mean anything if his second wife had made the accusation, a husband can be nice to one wife and then sh... to another wife (though usually the pattern holds), but considering that the only reason for those charges are the claim of some third party, I think we can chalk this one up as a hit-job, at least until any other proof turns up. Especially considering that the story originated at TMZ.

To further explain why the electoral college is an idiotic construction: states are apportioned so many delegates and told to determine how they will vote however they like.
Only one state doesn't run a winner-take-all process, which is why the voting is only relevant in the states that might swing to another party.
Oh, and it doesn't need to be abolished to get a popular vote outcome—if enough states sign up to have their delegates abide by the result of the popular vote that >1/2 the votes will agree to it, then the electoral college will change to function on a popular vote with 0 constitutional amendments. After all, it's up to the individual state to determine how they vote.
And that's what the popular vote project thing is doing, getting states to sign up to this.

... And even if it's a kid, I still stand by what I said. A crime is a crime, especially one like this that is certain to scar the victimized child for life; the only thing that will change is that the legal punishment will be less severe.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Something needs to change in our society, and quickly. A lot of kids just don't know how to be kids anymore.
Yeah, I know. That's part of what makes me so furious: If it's indeed the kid who wrote the note or at least was a willing accomplice, then that means his/her mind was poisoned by whichever adult decided it was OK to indoctrinate him/her with such despicable beliefs.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.TL;DR on the article: A Trump appointed judge basically said CNN would win if the case went to trial, so Trump should just give Jim Acosta back his credentials.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Democrats are at a pickup of 38 seats right now. If they pick up two more, they will have restored the majority from 2006.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."So much for a red wave! It's become a blue harvest!

"Yup. That tasted purple."It's a shame the Republicans have the color red, a Red Harvest sounds way more menacing.

I for one find it ironic that red is often the colour of the left-leaning parties in other countries.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.It's more ironic that the Republicans somehow managed to claim the colour red as a permanent association, given that Red has been associated with the Left since the 19th century and the US parties didn't have permanent colour links until recently.
You'd have thought they'd want to be as far away from it as possible.

Simply one more way that Americans take established political concepts and shit on them.
Like our use of "Liberal".
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnFine by me. Blue is my favorite color.
It was basically the news media deciding to use red to stand for the GOP and blue to stand for the Democrats during the Gore V Bush election of 2000 and it stuck.
Yeah, for what it's worth Blue standing for Democrats and Red standing for Republicans is a very new thing.
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"Honestly, this is pretty arbitrary...red is the colour of the communists, including the authoritarian communist parties, but also the colour of the social democrats, but it was also the colour of the Nazi Party. The only true rule there seems to be regarding party colours is that green always stands for some sort of environment friendly party unless you are in Ireland.
