I would definitely like to see the WB cartoons in greater availability. For that matter, I'd like to see the wider catalogue of MGM cartoons get some greater availability—like the great Harman-Ising short "Bottles." All you ever see of MGM cartoons is Tom and Jerry, Droopy, Red and the Wolf, and some of the Tex Avery shorts.

X-posting something from the Coyote vs. Acme thread that touches on a deeper issue with WBD that may have led to Coyote vs. Acme being shelved:

WBD has always struggled with making a full length Looney Tunes movie work.

  • Space Jam was a success, but it was a thorny one. There was a lot of conflict during production that boiled down to whether it should be a "Looney Tunes guest starring Michael Jordan" movie or a "Michael Jordan movie guest starring Looney Tunes" movie. They ultimately went with the latter option.

  • Back in Action was a deliberate attempt to make the Looney Tunes the star this time around. The creator of that movie supposedly hated Space Jam because it was more about the human star. But Back in Action's poor performance at the box office if anything validated the decision to make Michael Jordan the center of Space Jam.

  • Hence why Space Jam A New Legacy went back to Space Jam's approach. Unfortunately, while it fared a lot better than Back in Action, it was released at a bad time. And its main star didn't have the same star power as Michael Jordan did back when the first Space Jam was released.

  • And that brings us to Coyote vs. Acme.

The Looney Tunes' movie career has been a difficult one, that much is certain.

The fact that Urkel Saves Santa: The Movie!, which was originally shelved and written off for taxes by WB, got a release anyway last year is more or less a good sign that Scoob! Holiday Haunt couldnote  be taken off the naughty list as well in the future, and also a sign that Warner Bros. can undo write-offs. Just look at what they did with the Salem's Lot remake. They originally shelved it for a tax write-off, but later undid the write-off to release it on Max at a release date they're still working on.

There was a Looney Tunes comic (#78) where Daffy Duck was a spy infiltrating Acme which had suddenly become safe to use, and his handlers were worried the Coyote would catch the Road Runner. "All this safety is due to a rise in quality in Acme products! If it continues, the world as we know it will be destroyed!" the mastermind was Elmer Fudd, who planned to increase Acme safety so villains would never be embarrassed again.

(Lola also starred in some comics as a pizza delivery girl who got in wacky shenanigans, usually delivering to gods and monsters.)

I was told “source or it didn’t happen”.

Fearmongering about Pepé Le Pew being banned or retired forever is all but nothing on my end. He is not cancelled but they probably want to avoid his problematic side from now on.

—————

For the record, Tiny Toons Looniversity did not impress me. It’s second season got better as far as I heard, but the show is mostly tame. Bugs Bunny Builders is a lot more enjoyable even it’s for a young audience. It just looks and feels fun especially with its tight runtime per episode. And they take a lot of liberty with the Looney Tunes library. I’m happy about that.

And once again, I’m very excited about The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. Might be the best movie in years.

Lots to look forward to before the brand eventually slows down and takes a break for a few years.

I also thought what I saw was Back in Action being a case of bad release timing and lack of advertisement from WB.

I'm a massive, massive Looney Tunes fan and even I didn't see Back in Action in theaters. Why? Because the Tunes had been on TV every day for the last fifty years and I didn't think they'd ever go away, so paying to see them on the big screen didn't make sense at the time.

It's become one of my greatest movie regrets.

I never really understood why people always say Back In Action was poorly advertised. I distinctly remember commercial tie-ins with Sprint, Wendy's, and Geico. Plus the usual trailer and tv spots.

Finding Nemo alone was enough to sink it. Disney knows how to work a crowd better than Warners ever has.

[up][up] I distinctly remember the trailer that looked like an ad for a James Bond movie, but then the 007 turned out to be an upside-down "LOO."

I never really understood why people always say Back In Action was poorly advertised. I distinctly remember commercial tie-ins with Sprint, Wendy's, and Geico. Plus the usual trailer and tv spots.

It's a way of acknowledging a film's financial failure without calling the film itself bad, and deflects blame from the audience or the filmmakers to the studios, the socially acceptable target for blame.

Wasn't it in competition with Finding Nemo, The Cat in the Hat, Elf, and Master and Commander?

Finding Nemo released earlier in the year, but you're right on M&C and Elf, with The Cat in the Hat released the following week.

Back in Action did so badly it couldn't even make its production budget back worldwide.

That's even worse when you remember that a movie needs to make about 2.5 times its production budget to be considered profitable. You have to factor in advertising costs and the cut that the theaters get from sales.

Even Space Jam A New Legacy was able to make slightly more than its production budget back.

I am fairly certain Back In Action wouldn't have had such a high budget, if they hadnt been required to do reshoots, and requiring scenes to be re-animated.

That said, I am glad they redid the last 15 minutes.

Though Back in Action's budget was $80 million. That's about the same as Coyote vs. Acme's budget. Back in Action grossed $68.5 million worldwide.

Space Jam A New Legacy's budget meanwhile was $150 million. It grossed $163.7 million worldwide.

I know I say this more than I complained about the animation on Hirogaru Sky Precure (Which according to a fellow troper, was twice per page for months) but Me TV has the Looney Tunes, they've been airing them every day of the week every morning. If you can PLEASE support this release. It's the last Saturday Morning Cartoon Block on Broadcast. The censorship is minimal, they air rare shorts that were scarce even when CN still reran them. The ratings are good (500K) but if you want to show the Looney Tunes are still profitable and viable this is your best bet.

To see David Zaslav actually lose for once (i.e. not being allowed to write off the completed The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie since it already got a new distributor) is a breath of fresh air for us.

Also, despite what some of you may argue, Warner Bros. still does have some amount of respect for Looney Tunes. The fact that Bugs Bunny Builders and Tiny Toons Looniversity were lucky enough to move forward and even get a second season further supports that.
