The mass produced ones from 4. Those noises they made were pretty bad.

The Gekko ones were creepy. The legs looked like they came from giant alien lizard people and they mooed.

...Why did they moo?!

The surrealism is part of the horror.

I think Peace Walker creeped me out the most.

And that lobotomy scene. No wonder Big Boss was even more traumatized.

[up] Wait what lobotomy scene?

Because if we're talking creepiest scene in MGS, for me it depends. If we're talking creepy in terms of sci-fi, then anything to do with the A.I. in MGS2. If we're talking creepy in terms of "holy shit this could happen for real wtf we're they thinking", it would be the you-know-what at the end of GZ. You know, the thing with Paz? So bad a scene, that I can't will myself to actually really see it. (Thanks Chip Cheezum for providing a time skip option when he was Let's Play-ing MGSV!)

The part where you go inside Peace Walker and rip out her CPU.

While hearing the Boss A.I becoming less and less coherent as you do so. It's part of the fight, and not a separate scene is the worst aspect.

It really scared the shit out when I played. Had to pause several times just to keep my composure.

Somehow, I didn't process that as a lobotomy scene.

But now that you describe it as one...

...OOF.

For creepy in terms of sci-fi, I'm gonna go with the kids in Revengeance; and more specifically the kids' brains when we see them - and when Sundowner grabs one.

As for creepiest Metal Gear / Metal Gear-derivative, I'm inclined to agree with Peace Walker. There is the argument for Sahalanthropus mentioned above that it requires Powered by a Forsaken Child in order to work at all, but for me that removes some of the horror. Making Acceptable Breaks from Reality for the impossible physics of a Metal Gear in the first place, psychic stuff doesn't exist in reality (or in my understanding of reality, anyways), so that diminishes the horror.

An AI on the other hand? Those exist, and are a major ongoing area of research. We may not yet be at the level of creating am AI as sophisticated as the Mammal Brain, let alone full on personality recreation, but we could possibly one day get there. Having to then essentially lobotomize one, especially a recreation of my mother? That would break me.

Now if we want to go for scariest Metal Gear, thats a toss up between REX and Arsenal Gear. For sheer design as tool of war - REX got blown the fuck up, left to rust in an abandoned base 9 years, had its railgun scavenged which presumably should throw the thing way off balance, and still kicked the shit out of a pristine model of the very Metal Gear designed specifically to counter against REX and her derivatives all because a fucking weaboo built it to kickbox without telling anybody.

As for Arsenal Gear (and Sons of Liberty as a whole, really), uh, [gestures vaguely at everything to do with American politics & the internet in the last two decades, and especially last 6 years]

Of course depending how strict or loose we define a Metal Gear, the Snakes and Raiden qualify as well, which adds a whole other element to the question

I’d say the creepiest element of Metal Gear to me is how Sons of Liberty manages to continue to be relevant in society 20 years after its release.

You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!

This was brought up once before but Ocelot seems to be a far better, or at least more informed agent than Solid Snake. He's definitely faster if Super Smash Bros has anything to say about it since Snake can't dodge Palutena's autofirereticule in Super Smash Bros.

He's always in the know, acting as a double or even triple agent, hypnotized himself to create a near unbreakable cover, seems to possess most of the same skills, saved Big Boss on more than one occasion, captained an operation to create a dummy military operation that lasted for decades in the wake of a previous PMC's destruction.

In Sons of Liberty he somehow knows exactly where Snake will be at the exact time Snake gets there despite wearing optic camouflage, Snake and Otacon being a fringe operation as it is. I guess it was said that he gave them the tip about the tanker? Still, knowing that Snake would act the way that he did - and why even give them the information?

This leads to a later Batman Gambit in Guns of the Patriots where Ocelot predicted Snake and Otacon still being in touch with/looking after Sunny and partnering her with Naomi to create a virus that Snake would have to survive several near-death experiences just in order to upload into the center of a heavily-armored battleship crawling with elite super soldiers armed to the teeth after Ocelot ensured Snake's body and mind were exhausted and his spirit broken.

...and at the end of the day this went off exactly as he planned.

Like. This man is either extremely lucky or the greatest tactical genius/con artist of all time. Man was pulling so many strings he put the mob out of business.

I mean, not to take away from his skills but quite a few of those situations was Ocelot setting the stage and trusting Snake and the Patriots to act in their nature. The tanker mission had the benefit of the Patriots giving him all the resources to lure Snake into the trap, all Ocelot had to do was wait for the one point Snake could infiltrate the tanker (and to answer your question[up] the Patriots wanted to frame Snake and get him out of the way, hence why Ocelot set the trap).

As for GOTP that's actually not what the plan was. Naomi was meant to get FOXALIVE to Otacon's hands so it would be uploaded into the Patriot AI system and destroy all of it bringing about complete anarchy. Sunny threw a wrench into it by designing it to leave the critical civilian infrastructure intact, and Naomi was caught off-guard that Sunny had decoded her message to Snake and Otacon.

Did You Know Gaming video on V's disarmament story.

It turns out the higher ups for the disarmament group did start actively cheating using a bot because they became disillusioned by Konami not letting them do so.

Playing through Metal Gear Solid 3, and I decided to switch things up by doing a murder-y playthrough. I've always tried for low-kill runs, so this'll be something different.

I wonder how long The Sorrow will end up being. Anyway, I'm just before the boss battle with Ocelot.

It's not any longer, just harder: you'll have more spirits to evade, and maybe a few unusual ones if you killed them in bizarre ways. Best example being the guy screaming about how you ate him; that only occurs if you kill a guard, let a vulture eat away at his corpse, and then capture and eat the vulture.

G Man Lives did a retro review of Metal Gear Solid 4. It's got me looking back and realizing that in addition to the game having more cutscene time than actual gameplay time in certain Acts (especially if you're familiar with the gameplay), certain aspects which back then came off as quirky fanservice are now just downright perv-ish - namely, the 2nd phases of the Beauty & Beast Corps fights.

Might be another reason why Konami and Kojima are hesitant to remaster it, in addition to the game engine troubles.

#8392: Jun 5th 2022 at 5:26:55 AM

As far as I know, it doesn't suffer from the problem Quiet did - that Kojima tried to defend the choice using the in-universe reasonings (although as far as I remember... there isn't any for the B & B Corp.) So each player can decide if it's just the whims of a guy who wanted some fanservice in his game, or if it's an element that fits in with the game's themes of time and youth passing Snake by. Or if it's both.

I agree that MGS 4 comes off as weirdly leering, though. Even aside from Snake, you have things like Johnny trying to cop a feel on Mei Ling's ass, or Naomi not wearing a bra for... Some reason. (There is a game play tie to that one, but it's not even one the player has to come across at all)

That said, I don't think it has any influence on why there hasn't been a re-release of 4. Just one look at Konami's Castlevania pachinko should make it clear gratuitous fanservice isn't an issue.

[up]I suppose I worded things a bit odd, but I actually meant for the fanservice problem and the lack of a modern port to be separate issues. My bad.

And yeah, I agree - Konami isn't the type of company that would care if western audiences were offended by that sort of stuff. Furthermore, some folks might have a genuine point in complaining in that it's no longer a true port of the game if all of a sudden they start chopping out certain bits and pieces. And that's not even touching the stuff that might get removed solely because of annoying copyright issues - such as the ipod, the food items, or god forbid the guns getting re-named into bizarre stuff.

Random rambling.

Recently Metal Gear Rising Revengeance has been popping up in my feeds a lot and...well....

God, Armstrong is just so ridiculously memeable it's actually awe-inspiring. Hell, at this rate in the future people might remember him far better than than Raiden, if it's not the case already. [lol]

Revengeance still being a meme factory almost 10 years later (insert Snake growing old gif here) is incredible. And it's been getting a real resurgence lately, I've noticed.

Honestly, it goes to show how good the game was. People are still talking about it and using the memes basically as an excuse to bring it up again and spread it around the internet. It's unironically in my top 10 favorite games of all time.

[up] Right? Its concurrent players was up like 1000%, at least on May 23rd 2022.

Probably helps that the soundtrack still forking rocks and there's still that sentiment of forking the media and all that other stuff that everyone keeps quoting.

...Too bad Konami is too bone-headed to at least consider a remaster for Switch, PS4/PS5, and the Xboxes, much less think about a sequel.

It's kind of bizarre that Revengeance is almost the perfect Metal Gear story and exists entirely on tearing up Jack's happy ending as well as sense of peace. Pretty much giving him the ending opposite to Snake.

Jack doesn't get a happy ending because he didn't end. His story kept going, unlike Snake who was going to die in months.

The efforts of the heroes in the previous games weren't for nothing though — they ended the Patriots' grip on the world. For better or for worse, people were free to do their own thing without a buggy program repeating the same mistakes running the show.

Humans are capable of fucking shit up without buggy programs though.

I recall a saying that if you want a happy ending, it depends on where you stop your story.

Stories need conflict, and inevitably when there's a new story starring the same cast after they just went though a story about how they ended the war economy, something big had to fuck up the peace.

Of course there's no need to make what the heroes did in vain but it is easy to do when writing a sequel.

Man, I still remember when people were bashing on Revengeance because it wasn't made by Kojima among other reasons back when it was release day.

Now people are tripping over themselves praising it.
