This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

Didn't Piers Morgan get punched by someone?
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.Jeremy Clarkson I think?
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Yup. Which goes a long way to show just how loathsome Piers Morgan is, in that he can bridge political divides so well to make people want to punch him.
Avatar SourceI've heard unsavory rumors and comments from him, but I imagine that's barely scratching the surface.
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.Piers Morgan. That man has a creepy obsession with Meghan Markle didn't he? Even claimed that she ghosted him, though knowing him, he might've made that up.

Didn't he actually storm off a set and get fired after being called out on his bullshit as well?

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen. No wonder he got punched without any real consequences.
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult. We foisted him off on US media for a bit, but sadly he came back.
Avatar SourceThe same could be said of Nigel Farage, who unfortunately has a cushy career as a presenter for GB News.
DrunkenNordmann: That actually happened. A co-host called Piers out on his obsession with Meghan Markle and he threw a bitch fit by leaving the set of his own show.

"Punishment is not the answer. Punishment is easy. It's lazy. Redemption is hard. Redemption makes you work."-Skulduggery PleasantYeah, and it ended up in a really weird moment where Fox News tried to hold up Morgan as a martyr to “cancel culture” (bleh) because he DARED to criticize the royals and…voluntarily left his own show live after one of his co-hosts criticized him for his own behavior towards Harry and Meghan.
Why the hell do you care about this, Tucker Carleson? You even admitted in that same segment that there’s no damn reason for people across the pond, much less YOU of all people, to care.
Also, I was better off not knowing how Tucker Carleson actually sounded and having Seth Meyer’s impression of him as his voice in my head.

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. The irony being that people like Piers Morgan, Nigel Farage, Tucker Carlson and all these right wing grifters being the types who love to cancel other people but cry foul the moment the same thing happens to them.
As anyone knows, they believe in free speech but only when it applies to them. Their detractors and anyone on the left (or left of them) aren't allowed to have free speech because then they would accept that free speech goes both ways.

Labour MP suspended over unspecified but apparently very serious allegations. Handy timing for the Conservatives as a distraction/what-about but Labour can at least point to the suspension being quickly enforced compared to Conservative dawdling in similar situations.
(Though of course this does not make the behaviour itself any less repugnant.)
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."Government to launch legal action in attempt to retain Johnson WhatsApps
Ministers have launched an unprecedented high court bid to avoid handing over Boris Johnson's unredacted WhatsApp messages and diaries to the government—commissioned public inquiry into the handling of Covid.
In a move immediately condemned by bereaved families and opposition MPs, the Cabinet Office told the inquiry, headed by the retired judge Heather Hallett, that there were "important issues of principle" over passing information that might not be relevant.
Johnson said on Wednesday that he had given unredacted material to the Cabinet Office and urged it to share it with the inquiry. But the department is concerned this would set a precedent that could lead to Hallett demanding the WhatsApp messages of serving ministers — not least Rishi Sunak.
A spokesperson for the inquiry said Hallett was formally served notice of the Cabinet Office's plan to seek judicial review of her demand for the material at 4pm on Thursday, the deadline she had set for the evidence to be provided.
The Cabinet Office's letter to the inquiry said the legal process was being launched "with regret and with an assurance that we will continue to cooperate fully with the inquiry before, during and after the jurisdictional issue in question is determined by the courts".
So in other words, the Tories are worried that their dirty laundry will be aired out and hope that Rishi Sunak won't be caught in allegations of corruption and sleaze.
"Punishment is not the answer. Punishment is easy. It's lazy. Redemption is hard. Redemption makes you work."-Skulduggery PleasantBasically, the government set up a public inquiry to conduct an evidence-based investigation into the government's handling of COVID and are now going to court to try and stop the inquiry from *checks notes* gathering evidence to investigate the government's handling of COVID.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Johnson is going to give what he can directly the commission which is hilarious. Presumably he thinks it'll reflect and his rivals and the current government as much or worse than it will on him.
I can only assume that there's a large number of skeletons in this closet, if the Conservatives are trying so hard to keep it closed.
