Well, Devilman Crybaby is out. It's not bad. It's not bad, but it feels like a mistake. You have a story that absolutely demands bombast combined with a directorial/artistic style that goes out of it's way to alienate the viewer. The story has it's merits and the style has it's merits, but combining them produces something less than the sum of it's parts

Having seen the show proper I find myself more or less agreeing with this.

I don't think it would have been as big an issue if the writing proper was just stronger and everything wasn't rushed but I question whether Yuasa was necessarily a good fit for this show having seen the final product. Some of the scenes work well with Yuasa's stylistic direction and the show isn't horrible by any means, but overall it kinda feels like something is off with the production on the whole and I think the manga is still the best version of the story.

Besides everything that already got mentioned I feel like Ryo's character is sort of mishandled here, and makes it a lot more transparent that he's ultimately a villain, which I don't think works as well compared to the manga which is kinda bad because IIRC Ryo was basically completely absent from the story after Akira becomes Devilman until he shows up near the end.

On one hand I do think it's interesting/kinda neat that they made Miki half-japanese. I wondered when I saw her dad because he looked like a common Phenotype Stereotype you see in a lot of anime; I guess it ended up being important after all.

Theres quite a few big differences between the adaptations And humanity does a llot of more terrible things to the point Akira onky wanted to protect Devilmen and gave up on humanity (Not entirely true. He'd still protect people he feels deserves it)

The original was anti-facism and the escalation of war. Along with Akira and Ryo could have stopped it from getting that bad if either had decided to talk it out. One was too guided by emotions (Akira) and the other too prideful despite questioning his actions (Ryo).

[up] its nice his kids werent blonde and blue eyed.

I do have to admit that Taro's death and his dad finding him were very emotional and well-done. I legitimately didn't see it coming, but I guess maybe I should have been smarter.

Also I knew Akira sounded familiar. He has the same seiyuu as Meruem lol

Soundtrack for the show was fairly decent as well, the more synthy stuff didn't do much for me but Kensuke Ushio's more emotional melodies are fantastic.

Will be looking forward to the OST when it drops in a few days.

What a fucking trip. Pretty much everything I expected. Goddamn.

The lightspeed pacing is noticeable, but things move fast in the original as well. Here it rubs up against the Adaptation Expansion, but I think it was still largely worthwhile. While I'd say the original manga does do a better job hammering home it's broader message (helped by being more concise), and I agree that Ryo's revelation could have been done better, I like the expanded character focus and the different angles it brings to the Devilman story.

Yeah in the end I'd definitely agree it's worth watching if you're a fan of the series.

[up]Some of the content in th show made me wince. I think I’m pretty hard to freak out, so yeah, that was a new experience for me.

I recommend it, because it does not pull its punches. At all.

Just watched the first three episodes (I read the manga back in high school btw) and I really like this reboot. It did a good job in updating the original story without taking away elements that made it good in the first place. I also like the art direction which seems to be going for a Studio Ghibli style, which reminds me of how the manga has kind of a Tezuka style to it (both styles really class with to the actual story tone which is incredibly dark, violent and full of nudity).

I actually didn't care for the art style that much. The animation itself was good but the artsyle just straight up ugly at times and the women just looked so disproportionate, Miko's boobs were straight up laughable in some scenes. The demon designs took a hit too, as many of them just looked straight up goofy instead of bizarre or unsettling. The prehistoric scene was straight up lazy compared to the OVA's and just highlights everything wrong with the artsyle. Don't get me started on Jinmen. Worst. Jinmen. Ever. I can't believe they dropped the ball on him so hard. Easily my biggest letdown with this show. Oh and the sanic fast running animations. The airplane arms has been outdone for silliest anime run.

Another thing...Akira's lack of nipples was really weird. Also Miki having barbie doll anatomy sometimes but not at others? Thecensorship was weirdly inconsistent. And while I appreciate not shying from violence, It failed where the OVA succeeded in making the gore feel visceral and detailed. In the OV As you saw guts and chunks of bone fly out, but here that happened rarely and it was mostly a lot of red or orange(this was a weird design choice, they're bleeding orange juice? lol) and getting cut into steaks.

The OST overall I have mixed feelings on. The main battle theme or whatever(the ones that was in the trailer) was great but the Sabbath music was a total buzzkill for that scene. I was expecting something like the second part of Me! Me! Me! not some tame EDM stuff.

Akira felt off in the beginning, like I know his wimpiness in the manga/OVA was insufferable at times but here he felt almost generic shonen loser hero and even slightly boring until he Devilman'd up. Ryo's design still sucks, but that's my only real complaint with him. Miki was cool although a bit too good girl which once again misses some of her charm from the manga. SIGH. They never get Miki right. Miko was neat and i appreciated her presence(I dislike how a certain thing was sort of glossed over and never really confronted)but her boobs were so offputting. they just looked straight up DUMB on some shots due to the artsyle. Also all the T&A shots on her were kind of weird, she's in highschool guys :/

I actually thought the additional/original content pre-"dear readers" was kind of meh for the most part(I hate what they did with the gay guy's characterization), and to me this show was best when it was following the manga more closely. The last few episodes were the best part, but I was kind of iffy at the beginning episodes. The sabbath seemed to lack proper build up despite being executed pretty well and the pacing was really weird and even disjointed at times, with scenes seeming very abrupt and even slightly confusing(donkey noises?). As for the beatbox crew, yes they had some slick raps but it felt kind of overused and the butterfly guy's scene straddled the narm line pretty hard lol. It was cute the first two episodes but I didn't need anymore after that.

The show really need to have 3 more episodes to better spread out its pace. Things just felt too abrupt or ended too soon or in the sabbath's case, happened too early. I do like how Devilman himself had his sorrow for humanity played up more, and the scene with the kids was pretty touching.

Overall I enjoyed it and think it got better towards the end but the perfect adaptation? Nah. It also made some choices that had me preferring how the OVA handled them.

Koda makes a lot of sense when you realize he's supposed to contrast Miko, especially with her own killing of someone she liked, casual murder, and not batting an eye/not caring her grandma died. Miko still had something (Miki) to help her reconnect to humanity. Alira saved Koda from his mindless rampage...but that was it. The one thing he still had left like track was no longer possible and he had nothing left to really keep him on mankinds side. So he had nowhere to go but down.

Akira makes sense when he's supposed to see the good in others and cry for their sakes. Essentially his characterization contrasts fucking insane Ryo who stays crazy for most of it. I'd hardly call Akira a stock shonen hero either because he doesnt AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and honestly it is an insult. Even the way he just ignores Ryo being clearly unhinged at the beginning when he threatens some mostly harmless rappers with guns would have gotten some response from a shonen hero.

Akira isn't anywhere near as obnoxious as most stock shounen heroes are when he becomes Devilman.

Hes more like the template that most manga anti heroes tend to take inspiration from (Like Guts, Kaneki, Shinichi, E Tc) as well as Skull Man.

I feel Jinmen was weakened by Ryo being there too.

Jinmen is one of the most iconic Demons alongside Silene and Psycho Jenny. So it's a shame he was a tad wasted.

Another thing I'll say in Crybaby's favor is that Akira's human look after he goes Devilman is better than the manga's. He still keeps the boring haircut in the manga, but in Crybaby his hair gets a lot more wild and he also grows like 2 heads taller. It's a much better contrast.

[up]x3 I agree with most of what you said.

On one hand he wasn’t 100% the sadistic Hannibal Lecter villain he was in the manga, OVA and Cyborg 009 vs. Devilman ova.

However I would argue that this show retain the same impact he had on the main character. In the manga and crossover film, he ate whole Akira’s childhood friend forcing him to kill her in order to kill Jinmen. In the ova Jinmen ate his mom with said mother convincing Akira to kill her to get to Jinmen since she is already dead. In Crybabies its the same thing as the OVA, except now Jinmen takes possession of Akira’s father body. So basically Akira tried in vain to convince his dad to take control of the demon body. This obviously failed so now Akira has to kill both of his parents to free them of this abomination. Oh and Ryo shot the head of the girl who is similar to Sachiko, Akira’s childhood friend from the manga. Seriously is every new adaption of Devilman trying to top the soul crushing bleakness of the Jinmen story?

I feel like the main problem with Jinmen was mostly a pacing thing. It felt rushed compared to how the manga did it, in my opinion, which overall is still my main problem with this adaptation. Having at least 3 more episodes would have helped the show breathe a lot more. TBH I feel like the premise could have easily sustained a full 26 episode series and it would have worked better with a lot of the things they were trying to do.

Btw the OST is out.

This is the best song.

[up] That I also agree with. Funny enough that was actually my issue with story ordering of the second half of the OVA; I think Jinmen should of been the last guy Akira fought instead of Siren since the story was a major turning point for the main character therefore the OV As should end there. Same could be said for Crybabies as Akira being forced to kill both of his parents seems like a more fitting climax for the overall season.

The show would benefit with having more episodes, but it seems like lately Netflix has been stingey in the quantity if episodes they give to animated shows. Hell, I was surprise at how short the second seasob of Seven Deadly Sins received.

It's a stylistic mismatch, but it's at least a gorgeous animation showcase. Even if the imagery does nothing for the story, isolated some scenes are just art in motion.

The imagery does work for the story, sometimes. It's mostly in the more low-key emotional scenes, but Akira turning into Devilman for the first time was also really effective.
