So apparently the first raw episode is out. Is anyone planning to follow this at all?

I am. Only because of Hisako (Armor), though. I was surprised they decided to include her so I want to see what they are doing.

I'm a hardcore X-Men fan. Of course I'm going to watch it.

I'm quite intrigued by it anyway, since there's tons of stuff one can do with the X-Men, even with the "in Japan" qualifier. I'm curious on where it will go.

[up]A assume you watched Wolverine, then? Is it any good?

I also wonder if they will include Sunfire. It would be kinda funny if they don't.

If it's not as hotblooded as this opening than I'm not interested.

Wolverine wasn't much good, alas. It's a pretty slight story that's been padded out to fit 12 episodes (why was Omega Red there, again ?).

The chief issue, though, is that Logan doesn't have much charisma there. This series doesn't sell me at all on his relationship with Mariko, which is kind of a problem when it's at the center of plot.

[up]Too bad. Fortunately, the larger cast of main character can make X-men more interesting. With so many character to develop, there should be no need for padding and there is a larger pool for at last one be charismatic. Hopefully.

I wonder how they failed at making Wolverine charismatic, though. Considering how much people love him, this shouldn't be that hard.

I kind of get the impression it's difficult to write snark in Japanese, or something; it used to be a highly-prized skill in the Heian Era (or wit was, at least), but you don't see it often in anime, to the point that characters who do employ it are ludicrously popular in English-speaking fandom (just think of how many people know who Kyon is). Personally, I think it sucks that anime!Logan doesn't get to be one of them.

[up][up] The interesting thing is that Logan isn't exactly known as a snarky character. I mean, he snarks occasionally but it's hardly his defining characteristic.

Yeah, I am not sure where this rant come from. Logan is not particularly snarky. In fact, I believe Cyclops is more prone to it then him.

Beast looks sort of like a were-lion...this is going to remind me of FMA Brotherhood...

Anyways, theres always something bugging me about these Marvel animes so far...

  • Why do they always need to make such an excuse just to throw the characters into Japan? Why not make something Hero Man esque and make the story take place in where they were supposed to take place?...wherever Xavier's mansion is.

  • I know Hisako has existed even before this anime was made, but...does she feel a bit shoe-horned in just to show the viewers that they're watching an anime?

  • Squirrel Girl would make an entertaining anime...

  • what audience is this project supposed to be aimed at?

  • To make more familiar to the viewers. It the same reason the Live Action Akira is going to be on NY, I guess (except it is less insulting). This could be a tactic to gain public. In eventual sequels it can be set on US and no one will care because they are already fans.
  • Can't say, so I do not know. Maybe it is a similar reason to above. She may be the Naïve Newcomer Audience Surrogate. If she gets threat as a newbie, not a veteran, it won't feel shoe-horned. The X-Men team keep changing anyway. I find good there is someone other then the 'standard'.
  • Yeah.tongue
  • Shonen, I guess. Isn't it the same audience in US?

"Who is this supposed to be aimed at" has been the primary problem with this entire project. In theory they're supposed to be bringing in anime fans, but they've been getting American writers that don't really understand what their audience would want and assuming a fair level of familiarity with the characters

No wonder they look more like shows intended to attract american audiences.

^^^ It's going to be set in New York!?

I asked this before, but how do we check out an anime's ratings in japan?

Over here, the reception of these anime has been mostly negative, not that hard to see why...the only good thing that came was the Iron Man TRAILER, the actual show was bad.

Wolverine was negative from beginning till end.

But what about the audience over there? If these shows are meant to reel in a new audience, how is it doing for the intended audience?

[up][up]This is likely the main problem, certainly.

[up]The ratings can be checked at Anime News Network. They are aways publishing the ranks. I don't know how to read said ranks, though. At which rank is one anime considered 'successful'? Aside it, you could look aat the response in foruns and 2ch. If you can read Japanese, that is it.

And, yeah, Live Action Akira will be set in New York. Yeah, that suck. Tetsuo is now "Trevis" or something.

Looking at it, it doesn't look all that bad. It's opening with Phoenix. Overall, the graphics are much better, they've got the same feel as Red Line and the like. Still the RAW though. I'll give this one a shot.

There is subs already? I can't know, because apparently it is already 'licensed', so it is not listed on Anime Suki.

Still has the general problem of assuming familiarity with the original, but is pretty good if you are. And that music seems awfully nostalgic...
