(3) Well there's a couple of reasons for that:
- I am lazy as heck and don't have the energy to really learn games these days. The passion I had as a teen for games like Devil May Cry 3 is long since gone.
- I'm not really a fan of "style communities," or hardcore/technique masters/combo videos in general.
- While I like the deeper combat/Sonic actually using his speed to do things I'm not really pressed for the game to play like Devil May Cry. If I wanted Devil May Cry I would play Devil May Cry. There are enough Devil May Cry-lite games out there.
- I also really really hate the addition of "style points/grading" in video games. Sonic is fine because its about your collection/overall time at the end of a stage, but if each combat encounter is graded based on how versatile you were with Sonic's moveset - blegh. I can get a C or a B in a Sonic game and not feel frustrated. Getting graded on basically everything I do in Bayonetta or Final Fantasy 13 makes the game less fun.
If this became "Sonic Devil May Cry" I don't know if I'd enjoy that much.

Some impressions from someone who got the Demo
I wish the game had a freely available demo. When was the last time a 3D Sonic had one, Generations? (Even then, I remember having to make a European PSN account to get it
I don't remember Forces or Lost World having demos.

Forces definitely had a demo, though I'm not sure how its availability was. It might have been region specific or pulled from the digital distributors before the game launched?

Evidently Sega learned from the Generations leak. Remember back when that demo dropped, people datamined the entire game, including content that hadn't been revealed yet.

You'd think game devs and companies would've learned to capitalize on dataminers and leakers by now. Shit like that builds hype and hackers are willing to do that for free.

I wonder if, should this game be a success (and it's certainly looking that way), Open World is just going to be the future of the Sonic franchise
Insert semi-wary joke about Sonic Team eventually scrapping the entire concept a few years later for no good reason here. But seriously, it's interesting to think what other kinds of adventures could be interpreted in this style in the future.
Can you imagine an open world map that's just - like - a huge sprawling Eggman base? Or if we get a map of Angel Island that's actually gigantic and gives whole regions to Ice Cap, Mushroom Hill, Lava Reef, etc?

I'd have said the same thing about Rise of Lyric but that ended up being a failure.
Sonic Adventure was the beginning of 3D Sonic but that became hit and miss.
Sonic Mania was well-received but we haven't seen a Sonic Mania 2 or any new Sonic Rush/Advance/whatevers. Granted they tried to capture lightning again with Sonic Forces.

Mania almost certainly had to do with issues between the devs and Sega of Japan. Nothing is confirmed but there’s a lot of smoke there and the devs even took to twitter to air out their frustration on Origins development. You would think Sega would prioritize making them happy after Mania was such a success, but go figure.
I feel like this might be different because it’s Sonic Team and the game is looking to be a massive hit in Japan, which came out of nowhere. Sega might just decide to focus on their home market then moving forward. Which tbh might work out for Western fans in the long run if it means we get better games (assuming Frontiers is actually good).

It seems like he touched up some scenes, but the direction is still Sonicteam. And judging by the structure, it really does sound like more Lost World or Forces, aka Sonic just doing the exploration while friends occasionally radio in. I'll be overjoyed to be proven wrong.

Mine looked like that for a while until it didn't.
That's basically what I'm expecting too. I can't imagine how big of a role Tails, Amy and Knuckles are going to have if they aren't playable or participating in the plot.

Sega of Japan must be resentful, Mania was critically successful compared with Forces. Forces is among the favorite works of the staff alongside Unleashed, the two Adventures, and the movie. Shikeshi, Forces ended up being the profitable darling, and that's what the Sega higherups care more.
Regarding Flynn, maybe Takashi Iizuka recommended him.

So… how many Sonic games are there that have other playable characters than Sonic?
(I know the Rush games for the DS and the Advance and Battle games for the GBA had other playable characters, along with Sonic Riders, but that's about it.)
The lack of Tails anything in the trailers or early looks or anything is curious, given that we've seen or know of the presence of several other of Sonic's pals by now. We know what's going on with Big before we know what's going on with Tails.
So I've been predicting Tails is either the last of the friends to be rescued, or something close to it. Like a reverse Generations - where Tails was #1 and then you moved on to everyone else.

If we're including spin-offs then the number of games with other character probably outnumbers those with only Sonic. There's all the racing games (Drift 1 & 2, Sonic R, all three Riders, and Team Racing), the SegaSonic arcade game, Fighters, Shuffle, Battle, and all the Olympics games. There's also Tails Adventure and Tails' Skypatrol which don't have Sonic.
Probably sicne Sonic's speed would lend itself to button mashing while DMC type games are more about style, precision, timing and maintaining flow.
