[up] I think both of these posts probably make more sense on the Five-Man Band thread then this one, although it is true that the problems with this trope and that one are very closely linked.

[up][up] If it's not, what is? And if not, is Science Ninja Team Gatchaman not the trope codifier then?

I wouldn't know, but it seems like a fairly old trope. I don't partake of older media as a rule of thumb.

[up][up]It was always my understanding that Science Ninja Team Gatchaman was indeed the Trope Codifier for the classic Five-Man Band, but I'm much less certain that it was for The Chick, which is what this thread is about. I can think of quite a few other possibilities before then, but it depends on what The Chick is, which we still aren't certain of.

@ Soupdragon... Where are you getting this from? Where did it say somewhere explicitly that the Five-Man Band was directly influenced by this... thing? It looks like it's probably as much of a Five Man Band as any but to base everything on it because... of some reason you seemed to pulled out of thin air? Not buying it, This is an old as dirt trope, calling it's make some colorful 70s anime thing just seems like you reaching for your favorite show and calling it the boss.

Also your making quite a few assumptions based solely on color and number, that isn't what makes a five man band a five man band. Out of nowhere the leader could be black or blue for all we know.

Teen Titans may seem like an explicitly Five-Man Band superficially but it's pretty obvious by the way things diverge that it's in no way a straight five man band which is sort of why there's a discussion about making an alternative FMB to begin with. TT, like many shows these days aren't following the specific mold, taking too many liberties for it to be a straight out and out FMB anymore and leaning more toward teams of five with certain character dynamics.

This isn't about numbers or colors as connection to position, ti was never about that and I think you need to take a step away from this... Gatchaman thing and actually think for a second. I mean the oldest entry as found by the wayback machine can't even seem to show anything referring specifically to gatchamn being the inspiration or the maker, but eon of the first entries.

While the chick shouldn't be rename,d I do believe that the Five Man Ban page can stand to have the chick position have an altenrateive called The Specialist referring to all you describe.
