Since Lake hadn't been with his mother for very long, he hadn't really been able to celebrate Mother's day himself. The only experience he'd had with the holiday was when he had been living with Luke, who had celebrated it with his mother.
To be honest, it had always made Lake a little sad...

Lake: <You're hardly alone there. A lot of the Pokémon we know either don't have parents, or had a falling out with them. I got taken away from my mother, and I have no clue who my father is. Woolly's parents died when she was young, so her brother had to raise her, Stratus' dad exiled him from his home because he failed to live up to his standards, and that's only the Pokémon on my team...>
