A suburb of Veilstone, about five or six years ago
Ashley lays spread out on her back in her yard, staring up at the sky. Cole, now a Pidgeotto, is nestled above her head, and Ion, a Nidorino, is splayed out by her side. She talks to them excitedly, one hand pointing to the tip of Mt. Coronet, visible in her peripheral vision, her hand sweeping across the sky as she gestures in all directions. Her other hand rests on an open book on her other side, depicting a picture of a Garchomp.
The sound of her name causes Ashley to sit up, Ion twisting around and Cole fluttering over to her other side. Her dad approaches, looking excited.
"Morning, Ash! Happy birthday!"
The nine-year-old Ashley giggles. "Dad, my birthday was two days ago!"
Her dad puts on a show of confusion, mischief twinkling in his eyes.
"Oh, was it? Well, I guess you don't want a present then..."
At this, Ashley scrambles to her feet, disturbing the book, which flips to a page with a picture of a pine tree. She runs over to her father.
"No, it's okay, Dad! What's my present?"
Laughing, her dad ruffles her hair, then whistles. A loud bellow sounds throughout the yard. Cole fluffs up his feathers, trilling defensively. Ion ducks behind Ashley's legs.
A red and brown figure bursts from the trees ringing the yard and runs over. It stops by the two and lets out another bellow, then sniffs at Ashley with a long nose.
"Mor!" it bellows again, sounding excited.
Ashley laughs and throws her arms around the creature.
"Oh he's so cool! What is he? No, wait!"
She turns and runs to where the book lays, still open, and starts rifling through it as her dad, Pokemon, and the strange creature watch. After a few moments, she triumphantly raises the book, displaying proudly a page containing a picture of the creature.
"He's a Heatmor!"
"Heatmor!" the Pokemon bellows in agreement.
"Very good, Ashley!" her dad says. "I'm proud of you. You've gotten so good at using that book!"
"Some day I'll fill the whole thing," she boasts, pointing to the area entitled "Notes" beneath the picture. "And James here can help me!"
It takes a few moments for the others to realize who she means, but soon her dad is smiling again.
"A good name. I'm sure he'll be a great help."
Ashley hugs her dad, then her new Pokemon.
"Thanks, Dad! He's the best birthday present ever! Well, besides Ion and Cole."
The woods surrounding Hearthome, present day
Ashley sits around her campfire. Ion, Cole, Six, and Domino are in various positions of rest.
"C'mon, guys..." she finally says, tossing a few sticks on the dying fire. "He can't be too far away."
Ion makes a disbelieving growl, which earns him a wing slap from Cole.
"Relax, Cole," Ashley admonishes him softly, giving him a gentle shove. The Pidgeot chirps indignantly and headbutts her shoulder, knocking her off her log. She laughs and hooks an arm over his neck to get up.
"Okay, focus," she says, stifling laughter. "Where haven't we looked?"
Six raises a scythe and steps forward when a loud bellow echoes through the woods. Domino hides his face behind one wing, but Ashley looks around excitedly.
After a few seconds, another bellow sounds and suddenly the ground besides Cole erupts into flame. The Pidgeot lets out an alarm call and leaps into the air, claws hooking into Ashley's collar. Before he's lifted her more than a foot off the ground, however, she unhooks herself and drops down, just in time for a red and brown blur to roll through the flames. A Heatmor, coated in flames, stands before them, letting out another bellow.
"James!" Ashley exclaims. The Heatmor lets out a happy grunt and nuzzles her with his (flame-free) nose.
"Ion, put him out, please... And the ground, before we start a forest fire." Ashley says, patting her Heatmor's nose.
Ion nervously calls up a small, contained Surf wave, dowsing James, the ground, and their campfire—as well as Six, Domino, and Ashley.
Six hisses and shakes water droplets in Ion's direction from his scythes. Dominos shakes out his wings and looks generally miserable. Ashley chuckles and wrings out her braid, then goes over to Domino and pulls out a towel, rubbing him off. Ion looks nervous and makes several nervous noises, until James pats him on the back to calm him down.
"It's fine, Ion, we're all okay. Now, let's get out of here. James, you're coming with us this time."
Ashley starts walking towards Hearthome. Domino, unable to fly with his wet feathers, hops from tree branch to tree branch above her. Ion, Six, and James trundle after her, while Cole alights and flies above, singing loudly in the sun.
Victory! Honor! Destiny! Mutton!
