This show kicks ass.

The characters can be annoying and unlikeable at time, but at least we didn't have characters being callous jerks for the sake of it.

Why is there this obsession around the wiki with characters being likable? You don't have to like characters for them to be entertaining.

But if they're protagonists you want to be able to relate in them in some way so you can get a feeling for the humor and where they're come from. Why would I bother with a series if I don't like any of the characters?

Because that feeling may only be coming from you and you alone. There is no reason for you to like every protagonist

I never said one had to like every protagonist, but I'm sure that more often then not it makes it easier to actually care about a show/series if there is one character that interests you.

Surprised there's been no talk about this show since. I'd heard good things about it from a couple friends, so I started with "Mother Daughter Laser Razor". For some reason, I like Louise the most.

Also, I just realized: this is probably the first time I've watched an entire episode of a FOX episode since 1993. No kidding.

Nowadays, I look forward to this show the most on Animation Domination Sunday.

I love the hell out of this show. I'm always fond of shows that keep their quirks as a sort of background radiation and otherwise try for a more grounded approach, rather than the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach most Fox animated comedies take. The Belchers are weird, but they're the sort of weird you'd actually encounter in the real world. The kids are slightly precocious, but it gets overwhelmed by things like Gene's obsession with fart noises and cheap jokes and Tina's nervous disposition. And Bob and Linda actually like their kids, warts and all, which is a refreshing change.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Liked tonight's episode, especially Linda's general attitude towards the other employees, which goes quite a ways towards explaining the kids' general ineffectualness. Tina's subplot was also fun, though I confess I'm mostly just hoping the milk kid sticks around. We've had desperate, lonely Tina for so long that I've kind of been wondering what she'd do with a boyfriend once she got one.

Also, Tina's had two birthdays, but Gene's still eleven! What? (Maybe he was ten in season one?)

Oh, I'm not sure I like the detail of "without Linda the restaurant's finances fall apart." It's nice to know that she does serve a vital purpose there, but I think it kinda undermines the fact that Bob just misses her.

[up]I missed the first five minutes and didn't get that it was a Brick Joke until I went back and rewatched it on Hulu.

"THEY'RE SELF DIPPING!"

...I feel like Gene and Louise become interchangeable when the episode isn't about them. Anyone else get that vibe?

They do seem to be reduced to Those Two Guys whenever one of them isn't in the spotlight.

Keeping things mildly on topic, I feel like this was both a very good Gene and an extremely good Louise episode, and really nailed down what separates them—Gene tries creative endeavors unprovoked, whereas the only thing that can motivate Louise to get creative is a thirst for revenge. Louise needs motivation, something to gain, otherwise nothing's stopping her from just sitting back and making quips. Gene is just naturally kind of ambitious.

And meanwhile, Louise is far more skilled than Gene is. She's a far more critical thinker, whereas Gene's skill set is limited to making fart noises on a toy piano. Tonight's episode hints at a potential evolution for him—yes, his lyrics are elevated by Kevin Kline and an eight-part orchestra and choir backing, but they're also not that bad to begin with.

And all of this deep critical analysis leads me to the most important question of all—why the fuck doesn't this series have a soundtrack album already?! Because it's been churning out great music week after week for a while now and I want to be able to listen to it on an MP 3 player.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

As soon as TE's name came out I instantly thought electric chair.

Pity I didn't take into account Fox's innately liberal bias which sees killing animals as much much worse than killing people.

Brother and sister in a romantic duet that's really about bestiality, that's really about inhuman treatment of a famous animal? We have a winner!

[up]Keep in mind that Bob's Burgers is a comedy first and foremost, and decidedly not a Sadist Show like the rest of Fox's line-up. We're losing a lot of funny without that elephant costume or the idea of Edison falling in love with an elephant.

9:30 is the death slot? I mean, it's not fantastic or anything but Prime Time is called that and stretches through to 11 for a reason.

I watched a couple episodes of this show last year, and didn't like it at all. IMO, it was just as funny as Family Guy (in other words, barely even funny). The only thing I liked about it was the girl in the pink bunny hat.

[up]Yeah, it gets off to a slow start, and has an issue breaking out of more formulaic plots early on, but it's settled into a nice groove and has a great character-driven approach to storytelling these days. It's also very grounded and consistent, as opposed to the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach most Fox cartoons take to their realities.

I don't know enough about your taste to know if any of that means anything to you, but you don't find Family Guy funny so you might get a kick out of its opposite.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

While there is a tiny amount of slow development with rare new characters sticking around for a while, there's a bit too much Status Quo Is God for my taste in a non-fantasical show.

[up]Do you mean that the show doesn't have any clear momentum, or are there specific scenarios they've snapped back from you take issue with?

[up][up][up] I'll tell you this: I love adult-oriented cartoons, my favorites being South Park, Futurama, and Metalocalypse. But I hugely dislike Family Guy, and didn't like what I saw of Bob's Burgers, but if it gets better in later seasons, then I miiiiiight give it another chance. IDK at this point.

Been diggin this show so far. I knew I loved it a few minutes into the first episode with the "Child Molester" joke, and I've been hooked ever since. Theres a sort of down to earth bizarreness about it thats hard to describe, but it hooks me in.
