I am pretty sure cockroach!Wriggle is a thing often paired with butt monkey Wriggle.

And I don't get either of them.

(Also, after two days of saying I had no write up ideas, I now have a write up idea! Prepare to be disappointed. For whoever cares.)

The closest fireflies get to cockroaches is that they both live in the same class Insecta. The orders are completely different. What is up with fans and their lack of comprehension of entomology? And taxonomy I guess.

Apparently the Spanish word for cockroach is derived from the word for beetle though.

The Lord of the Night

What year is it? Does it matter?

People in the human village often report seeing stars dance across the sky. Small, faint stars, echoes of a era long past. Reflections of fears long since faded into the night. Pretty to look at, but nothing to be feared. And yet these stars existed long before man settled in this land, and will exist long after they have destroyed themselves. That girl knows this, which is why she is content with simply leading her brethren in their illuminating dance through the darkness. She doesn’t worry about the years of man, for they are, in the end, finite.

She is Wriggle Nightbug, the firefly youkai.

Despite her awareness that her kind will outlive the other races of Gensoukyou, she is constantly fighting for the rights of her insect kin. Perhaps she knows that although their species will live long into the ages, their individual lives are fleeting. They are fated to short, simple lives, so it is for the best if those lives are in peace, free of the fear that they will be crushed, yes?

During the day, Wriggle is at peace. Well, Wriggle is always at peace, but during the day, she simply drifts along. If there is some task to be done, some job she has been hired to do, she will send her bug comrades posthaste. When all is well, she can be found playing with the small group gathered around the Misty Lake, the bold little ice fairy, her timid fairy companion, and the dim darkness youkai. Perhaps due to her more “mature” appearance and mannerisms, perhaps due to the responsibilities she already holds as master of the insects, the other child youkai look up to Wriggle as their “big sister”.

It is during the night where Wriggle Nightbug shines the brightest. It is during this time where she conducts her comrades in their dance through the air: the lights of Wriggle’s firefly brothers shining like stars, the chirps of crickets coming together to form a beautiful melody, forming a show that will capture the hearts of passerby. Meanwhile, the worst of the bug abusers, the ones who ignore Wriggle’s threats and torture bugs for fun, come to mysterious ends; their bodies often never found at all. But even during this time, where Wriggle’s theater of lights is in full bloom, her symphony of crickets is loud and clear, and her most deadly comrades strike at her enemies, the common man does not need to know fear. Wriggle is a easygoing youkai; she won’t go out of her way to hurt those she feels doesn’t deserve it and she is careless enough to still fall into traps, though she simply shrugs and continues to go about her night once freed.

Despite her cool temperament, there are those who fear running into her at night. At the same time, there are those who seek her out every time, hoping to see the festival of lights.

Some say the vampire rules the night. Others would argue that vampires simply live in the night, but it is the firefly who holds her hand on Gensoukyou’s fate as the stars, both the suns of other worlds and her own flying kin, ride across the dark sky.

What year is it? It doesn’t matter to her in the end.

I didn't know I still could write writeups that weren't minifics. Of course, it probably still has it's share of problems.

I was half-serious. I really did come up with an idea for a Byakuren write-up, but I probably wouldn't have mentioned it if you hadn't posted.

Well, "idea" is relative. I thought up a spellcard of hers that could be seen as thematically related to her life in general, which is basically how I do these things nowadays.

No, I mentioned that one before but obviously it never went anywhere. I like the name, but the thematic connection didn't feel very strong to me. Byakuren just doesn't feel very Makai to me.

On the other hand, it's hard to see how Superhuman "Byakuren Hijiri" can be about anything but her life. Probably still won't write it though, since I stayed up all night pondering zombies.

It's not about taking things, it's about making stuff up. Rewriting their life to fit the spellcard.

Cockroaches are immune to nuclear radiation. Wriggle can totally beat Utsuho! ..or become a Radroach youkai in the process.

Quoth Wikipedia:

It is popularly suggested that cockroaches will "inherit the earth" if humanity destroys itself in a nuclear war. Cockroaches do indeed have a much higher radiation resistance than vertebrates, with the lethal dose perhaps 6 to 15 times that for humans. However, they are not exceptionally radiation-resistant compared to other insects, such as the fruit fly.[23]

Fruit flies have to have radiation resistant. Dose bananas, know what I'm saying?

Tangentially, if you wanted to lightly flirt with grim (tossing your hair and whatnot) you could straight up steal a thing from Naruto and have Wriggle be a living hive for the insects she gathers, with various bugs living under her skin.

On a more comedic note, Wriggle sure summoned up a big, panel crowding swarm of bugs in no time flat in her Inaba chapter.

I think the living hive thing is actually kind of common in Japanese pop culture.

It wouldn't be too grim, would it? I mean, for her, it'd be natural and not at all painful or gross. The rest of us would have to adjust, but that's our problem.

It'd also be interesting if she could transform into a swarm, vampire-style.

There are bugs just about everywhere, at least outdoors. And most of them are darn fast.
