Religious imagery?

I don't think so. I think she's just using her power in that one.

To answer your question, Faw, the reason I don't like ditzy Kaguya is because nowhere else does she act like this. Having said that, her gleefuly swinging Toyohime's boomfan around is hilarious.

I spent a while writing this one, and I'll admit, it does have it's flaws. I liked how it turned out at least. Warning: Long.

The Pure Ones?

The Moon. To the people living upon the Earth, it was just a barren rock that revolved around their planet, just a goal to be reached in their journey upwards into the stars. Such impure creatures could never understand that the moon they see is only one half of the moon. The realistic moon. The Moon’s true potential lay on the other half. The fantastic moon.

It was their purpose to protect this fantastic moon from the impurity of the world below. They make sure that no mere mortal being comes to the Lunar Capital, they train and prepare an army of rabbits in case they alone aren’t enough, they watch over the Lunarians who have been exiled to Earth.

However, rumor has long circled the Lunar Capital that the sisters Watatsuki have grown lax in their duty. Their refusal to apprehend the fugitive Eirin Yagokoro has been an open secret for some time now. While proved innocent of treason due to recent events, whispers soon grew saying that they would regularly abandon their posts to descend down to that impure world below.

Watatsuki no Yorihime walked down the yard in front of her family manor, staring down the fresh new batch of flighty moon rabbits sent over from the captial proper to be whipped into place. Most of the rabbits cowered and whimpered as her eyes sank into them, but one seemed more puzzled than anything.

“You.” Yorihime called the rabbit and pulled her out of the crowd. “Does something trouble you?”

“Well, no, Miss Watatsuki ma’am sir. It’s just, you aren’t looking us in the eyes? I thought it was weird? Sorry ma‘am master sir!”

Yorihime gave a slight smile, causing the fidgeting rabbits to calm for a brief moment. It seems there was hope for at least one of these ditzy and irresponsible creatures. After all, this girl had noticed that while Yorihime looked them over, she never looked them in the eyes. Though the girl didn’t realize the exact reason , that staring into the lunacy inducing eyes of a dozen moon rabbits in such a short period of time would have adverse effects on even the experienced Lunarian, the fact that she noticed such a subtle thing at all was a good start for her. Yorihime gave a small nod of praise and then snapped back into her position as drill sergeant and began to grill the rabbits as to the training they are about to receive.

After forcing the rabbits through the drills for the day, and it was force since they constantly complained at having to do any physical task whatsoever, Yorihime flew off from the manor in search of her sister. The recent rumors concerning the two had reached Yorihime’s ears, and they truly worried her.

Watatsuki no Toyohime was staring into the Sea of Tranquility again. There was no real reason she was there, she just found herself standing before the Sea after a quick dance across the Moon. As she munched on one of the peaches she had carried with her, her thoughts drifted back to the Earth, which was easily viewable from the Sea at this time of day, and Lady Eirin, who she was perpetually putting her status and pride at risk by protecting. She wondered if Eirin was proud of her, of them, for taking her place as the Lunar Capital’s guardians.

When Yorihime landed besides her, the two simply stared at the Earth, wondering that same thing, though while Toyohime was simply lighthearted pondering, Yorihime seemed legitimately troubled over it.

Before long, Yorihime caught that her mind had wandered and turned to her sister.

“Ah. Excuse me! I lost myself. Sister, could you not wander off from the manor? Recently, the rabbits have started talking of more vile rumors…”

“Silly rabbits will be silly. Ignore them.”

“…as have our countrymen when I go out into the capital on business. It seems our visits to Lady Yagokoro are making our comrades uneasy. At least until this dies down, we mustn‘t draw suspicion to ourselves…”

“So you don’t want me wandering to and fro anymore?” Toyohime giggled and patted Yorihime’s head. “For a moment there, it appeared that you were the older one, doting over me like that.”

“…Please…don’t do that.”

“But don’t worry about me, I can see the state of the moon around us. There is no reason to get worked up over more silly rumors. Now…Peach?” Toyohime held out one of her peaches. Yorihime reluctantly took the fruit and being eating it in small bites.

The two didn’t return to the manor, though, and continued staring at the Earth. Despite their status as pure and it’s status as impure, they found themselves enjoying looking at the blue planet. Toyohime’s thoughts drifted to seeing those energetic earth rabbits again. Yorihime wondered what Eirin was doing now, whether she was looking at the Moon as they looked at the Earth.

The two returned home and continued their duty to protect the pure world of the Moon. The rabbits had grown lazy in Yorihime’s absence, and she immediately went to work scolding the reluctant rabbits and putting them back to their exercises.

Toyohime looked back to the Earth as it “set” and faded out of view. As the dark of the moon began to fall on Manor Watatsuki, she called her sister and the rabbits into the manor walls for the night.

If one were to look on at the manor at this time, they would not see Lunarians ordering a group of rabbits. They would see a group of humans bickering among themselves. Their pondering and worrying, their daydreaming about the Earth and the “impure” beings and traitors that lived down in the bamboo forest. The sisters Watatsuki didn’t notice how “human” they were themselves.

It mostly turned into a slice of life, and it doesn't really go anywhere, I'll admit. However, I had a good time writing it. The ending might seem a bit odd, but I always saw the Lunarians, as a whole, as very stoical, very "efficient". The Watatsukis expressing such emotions and idle thoughts pushes them closer to human than Lunarian. (even though, physically, Lunarians are human) I hope that makes sense?

Interesting thought. I think the fact that the Watatsukis are more human then most Lunarians has been brought up before, I think. But it could be that their links to Eirin and the Earth are 'corrupting' them, so to speak. It could be that their unwavering respect for Eirin is their Fatal Flaw, and their concealment of her location will lead to their fall*

.

Ahh, idle speculation.

Silly is as silly does.

Bleh. Someone makes one quip about things slowing down and someone else is all "we should start voting now" and soon everyone is voting and then we all get scolded for trying to rush through it.

Anyway, Moon Sisters. Their outfits always seems particularly strange, with the "strap" of the dress only being on one side, the other side just sorta hanging open. Sounds like a dress you need to wear a blouse beneath. Wonder how that outfit came about anyway. It's interesting I guess.

Also, Toyohime has manners. She doesn't wear her hat in the house.

You could ask the same of a lot of characters. Why do Reimu and Sanae wear such ludicrous outfits?

I see what you mean. The additional wind resistance must surely have a detrimental effect on their flight speed, which would obviously be sub-optimal for midair combat.

If what ZUN had to say about the Prismrivers is any indication, it's pretty much canonical that Gensokyo's inhabitants wear ridiculous clothes.

So odd outfits are just the fashion in Gensoukyou?

So what's the Lunarians excuse? (Maybe the Watatsukis outfits are fashionable? They aren't bad.)

It's fashion, darling.

Would this mean that Mokou and Wriggle's pants make them the most sensibly dressed characters?

Some have excuses for their outfits. Sakuya and Reisen are wearing uniforms.

As for the Lunarians, Eirin seems to wearing a medical outfit of some kind, and I'm fairly certain Kaguya's dressed in Earth fashions. 1400 years is bound to have some kind of influence on your lifestyle. The Watatsukis wear the same dress, albeit in different colours, so maybe it's a uniform?

Since Remilia supposedly gets more powerful when the moon turns red...how does it turn red? Is it actually some secret lunarian energy surge?

[up][up][up] Atmospheric effect. There's no real reason for this to make Remilia stronger except SYMBOLISM which youkai seem to thrive on.

Also, I think the Moon fashion is just odd. They dress their rabbit soldiers in something that's not really practical for combat but does look fairly stylish. It sort of reminds me of how in Gattica they sent astronauts into space in three-piece suits. Since Reisen The Original wore the same thing as Raysen and Anonymous Other Bunnies, its probably the official uniform which probably means that its not something the Watatsukis established.

Someone needs to draw the moon rabbits in camo. Arctic camo would probably work for the scientific side of the moon.

Got side tracked. Moon fashion. So anyway, we don't know what Raysen was wearing for her eternal medicine pounding duties because she ditched it to cosplay as a Tewi. Probably the same business suit since she's wearing it when she returns to the Moon but before she gets placed in Yorihime's highly trained derp squad. I guess that's just the Moon bunny uniform. How very odd.

The Lunarian guards that we saw briefly wore some kind of traditional Japanese looking armor.

And given Yorihime's general by the book except a few exceptions attitude, I don't think she'd dress as a super special snowflake so I'm going to guess that the Watatsukis' uniforms are traditional for their positions. They are similar enough that they could be variations on the same uniform.

Wasn't Eirin the person filling the Watatsuki's role before she left? I wonder if she ever wore the same uniform or whether she said "nah. I'll just wear my nurse stuff. It cuts out changing time."

Anyway, to sum up, their bunny soldiers dress highly inappropriately but stylishly in business suit-esque attire. Their city guards dress in traditional looking armor. People in high positions dress in weird fashions. Its probably safe to say that Lunarian fashion is highly eclectic. Thousands of years of tradition is probably to blame.

Like the Swiss guard in the Vatican or the guards in the Tower of London. Since they dress traditionally they look kind of silly. But they can still kick all kinds of ass.

[up] Despite my whining and whinging, I realized that the Watatsukis are just peachy. You are what you eat after all.

Does that work?

[up][up] And Sakuya dresses like a maid because she's a maid. IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!

Still doesn't explain some of the weirder clothing choices. Like Utsuho's schoolgirl outfit.

Also, think the red moon at the end of Eo SD is the result of Remilia's eclipse mist.

The article said that particles in the air could lead to a red moon so I think you're onto something there.

Also, Gensokyo has just as weird fashion as the Moon except Gensokyo is a mishmash of different peoples. The kappa all seem to dress alike, the two crow tengu we see dress similarly, except for Meiling the SDM dresses in Western fashion, the earth rabbits all dress alike, youkai have weird individual fashion choices and/or the Youkai Tailor just rolls like that, and the human village from what we see in PMISS favors traditional Japanese and Chinese fashion.

As for Utsuho, I feel that either Satori dresses her pets or just has closets of clothing and lets them pick out something to wear.

The Moon is weirder for its weird fashion since its more homogeneous than Gensokyo, all the Lunarians being from the same immigration wave.
