Plus there's no "Independence" faction option like in some mods.

...Yes there is, what are you talking about? The Abbasids face independence factions all the time. They also can be factioned into elective monarchy (at which point anyone can take a shot for the top, and often everyone does).

Abbasids could, but I didn't have an option for that when faced with the Karlings.

Gonna reform my own pagan faith and then sponsor mass conversions all over the damn place.

Also, I can't wait to see what After the End does with the dynamic reformations and adds as special mechanics for its own forms of paganism.

I've recently started playing EU 4 again and I have to say, the new mission structure is just amazing. Previously I pretty much ignored missions 90% of the time but now I actually have a reason to care about them. Not to mention that it's really aesthetically pleasing.

I wonder, does reforming your religion as a pagan still give you the ability to stop Gavelkind?

That's kind of part of the point of reforming the faith.

That fascist tree is probably gonna be the most popular alt history route. A worldwide spanning Evil Empire that is somehow ‘’not’’ as bad as the Nazis.

[up][up]And yet it would still probably be worse then OTL in that you'd have two sides of fascists fighting each other, whoever wins liberalism and human rights loses.

I mean, I very much doubt a regime in which Oswald Mosley has any kind of power wouldn't eventually become as bad as the Third Reich, it's more that it's a question of timeframe.

I wonder how bad the monarchist path would turn out - apparently you'll end up with Edward VIII on the throne and Churchill, Mosley and Lloyd George as his top ministers.

I also wonder if the monarchist path's "Ally Germany" focus also works if Germany's monarchist themselves or only if Germany's fascist (as Edward sympathised with Nazism).

Cryptic preview of an upcoming change in Stellaris. Makes me wonder how many pops a ringworld will have in the future.

Also, I'm trying to get the "Last, Best Hope" cheevo but just can't get any luck getting the War in Heaven to start, and the wiki isn't helping me. Like, is the chance of it happening re-rolled each time a Fallen Empire Awakens, making it a matter of save-scumming, or is it like the L-cluster and determined at the start of the game? And if one Awakens and the other doesn't immediately become its rival, can I just wait until the second Awakens too and get the war that way?

I've only actually seen a War in Heaven once, when I was playing as genocidal ascended robutts, so no one wanted to join my coalition. So of course when I play nice and maintain good relations with everyone, it doesn't happen.

Also looks like planet tiles are as predicted going the way of the dodo, it will be extremely interesting to see what will come of it.

@Ramidel: Indeed it is, you just need to be in a favorable geographical position.

So, after getting three game overs in a row playing as the Sheikh of Bukhara (was killed two times without issue, and one time the Emir revoked my only county), I've decided to move to the Southeastern shores of the Caspian sea and start the game at the earliest bookmark as the sheikh of Gurgan in the Abbasid Caliphate. Holding two counties (one of them is a Silk Way hub - there never was a money deficit), the sheikh was comparable in power to his liege, so the plan was obvious: fabricate claims on the Satrapy, wait until the Emir dies (or help him a little) and start a revolt against his successor while he is still weak. This plan succeeded, it helped that the sheikh had a Martial ability of 22.

Was victorious in the revolt, got the Emirate title, executed the former emir, defeated his uncle when his former territories left my realm, waited 10 years to change the succession law to elective, elected the youngest son with "Quick" trait (who's unfortunately grown up to be not as impressive as his father, ability-wise). Conquered the neighboring emirate on the West. Emir is dead, long live new Emir!

So, now I have 2 emirates in my realm, and my neighbors are: the Bozok Khaganate north of us (comparable in power), the Shahdom of Sogdiana northeast (slightly less powerful), the Khorasan Sultanate eastward (more powerful, allies), the Sultanate of Iraq southward (more powerful, fellow vassal of the Caliph), the friggin' Byzantine Empire westward (self-explanatory), and an emir who's holding four ducal titles against whom I can declare a Border Dispute war over two of his counties that comprise the Emirate of Tabriz (less powerful).

So the plan is either to engage the next 20 years in border skirmishes with the latter, and acquire the third duchy or declare war on Sogdiana over the Kara-Kum county and to reorganize my primary Satrapy into two duchies (the northernmost county is de jure of a different duchy). Then, become independent (folks already are having an Independence faction against the Caliph), reorganize into a Sultanate, and join either back to the Abbasids and continue working my way up to becoming a Caliph or join the Byzantines.

I have a couple of questions:

  1. Is there a point for a feudal ruler to conquer nomadic holdings?
  2. Are there long-term advantages in switching to Sunni faith (when the long-term goal is to rebuild the Persian Empire)?
  3. Do the Ortodox and the Sunni treat Zoroastrians differently? Is there a point in joining the Byzantine Empire once I gain independence?

Spiral out, keep going.

I think the main tactics are either relocation via a no CB war or getting the few allies that can stand up to the Ottomans.

Mainly it’s luck though.
