Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Make sure that you chop out the YMMV ones to their own page. After that, alphabet is probably the best bet. Most other categories aren't really clear cut and we don't need edit wars about what goes on which page. The alphabet is much more objective.

Put a link to the YMMV tab at the bottom of the alphabetical pages on the main page? (With no icon at the top the namespace is hard to find)

there is no icon at the top of pages for the YMMV tropes. (At least all the works I normally visit)

On the how to edit question: Working from "view source" cut-n-paste the stuff to be transferred. When you done all the transfers:
- Pre-lock: Do one edit to clear out everything that has been transferred.
- Post-lock: Ping a mod and they will unlock the article for the clean-out edit.
All the namespace tabs (like YMMV) should automatically show up on these new subpages, no problem.

Yeah, we should make it clear. If people see folders on the page, they will add back in folders that been moved to their own page. Seen it happen many times. Might as well make a good fix, while we're fixin'.
