No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

RIP to my beloved boxy Dreadnought. Such a cruel, cruel cut.
I'm wondering about the Death Guard, honestly. I suspect that the -1 toughness aura is going to turn out to be a bigger deal than we're expecting currently.
(Also, that characters and officers will grant other forms of toughness.)
Next new bit of stuff in this edition is going to be about the Custodes, apparently.
It's kind of interesting that the Lion's characterization after waking up from his coma consists of having the stick up his ass removed.
It's a contrast to Roboute's characterization which consists of him becoming even more bitter, cynical, and weary as he struggles to keep the Imperium together even as he doubts whether it's even worth saving.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt is also about loyalty, Lion is someone who used dobious method because he will never betray the emperor, "loyalty is own reward"
Guillman is a this point nominal loyal to the emperor, being this unique creature in the imperium who want the empire without the emperor. which by everyone else is insanity
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Sternguard Veteran model re-releasedI mean, official Titus model, apparently with a boardgame too.
"The Salamanders love it!"
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984There was a Spaceballs joke here and I'm a day late. I'm so sorry for this, though I know that it can never be forgiven, least of all by myself.

Dark Eldar in 10th.
I'm unimpressed with the new edition as a whole, not rushing to update. Like I really dislike that weapons are now completely unit-dependent, that a splinter pistol operates differently based on who's holding it.
But as for as my army goes, I always preferred when Power From Pain involved actually playing the game well, rather than the whole dark eldar army just getting more powerful over time, like robots slowly booting up.
But now it's just two options for rerolling? Boring.
I guess it's nice the DE are no longer crippled by basically being three armies in one that aren't expected to work together. Unless the kabal/cult/coven rules are still to come in the codex. Realspace Raiders doesn't seem to weld them together anymore, not that I really wanted to have to bring a succubus along to some reavers, it seems to just be "more commanders provide more tokens". Unless I missed whatever detachment rules or something demands one of each faction leading the troops.
Hoping wracks are still troops.
Hell, they've said they will be making new models, it'd be great to have a new unit for a change. I don't demand annual new additions, like fucking new Primaris Lieutenants, but it'd be nice if SOMETHING new came out. And not just a character; I fully expect every non-Marine / Chaos army is just getting a single resculpt. Like it'll be great for Vect to exist again but after a decade, it'd really be nice if the army had something new to offer. Conversely, getting all of our 5th ed heroes back would be something really exciting, but that'll never happen.
And it'll probably be another resculpt of Lileth Hesperex.
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984
I'm really amused at the lack of variety of DE Characters. When they were redone, the studio had a ton of interesting heroes for them, but when they found out that they couldn't have sculpts of them at all, they were quickly cut out, never to re-appear except in lore snippets.
Idle concept: "Hive Fleet Vanguard" creatures that act like Imperial Agents for the two Tyranid factions. A set of organisms (including specialized variants of existing creatures, possibly) that range ahead of Hive Fleets to explore, prepare ground, and possibly seed cults, with increased independence and intelligence. You can take them with either the Tyranids or the Genestealer Cults.
Born of the fact that Genestealers can have Imperial Guard units but not Tyranid units. I'm trying to think of something to play with the fact that Genestealers get free endless swarms and the Tyranids don't, but drawing a blank there. (Tyranids are still really good at swarming, anyway.)
Another concept: genestealer kroot.
Except that when the Tyranids tried to invade the Kroot homeworld, the stuff in the jungle chased them out.
And in the Ciaphas Cain books, we learn that to the Kroot palate, Genestealer hybrids taste disgusting.
And Kroot aren't exactly picky eaters.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThey kinda are given how they cultivate the exact traits they want and risking not getting into a evolutionary dead end.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Yeah, all of their warbeasts are kroot strains that have plateaued and can't advance further.
10th Edition Core Rules are now available for free download. As I have said before, I'm not a gamer so I can't comment on how they will play.
EDIT: I forgot to mention Legend rules for Horus Heresy vehicles will be available, but many of them will be unavailable for competitive events.
Legends of the Horus Heresy units (for use in matched and narrative play, but not competitive events)
- Leviathan, Contemptor, and Deredeo Dreadnoughts
- Kratos, Sicaran, Spartan, Cerberus, and Typhon Tanks
- Certain variants of the Land Raider, the Vindicator, and the Whirlwind
- Xiphon Interceptors, Fire Raptors, Storm Eagles, and Storm Birds
- Legion Support Weapons
- Fellblades, Falcions, Mastodons
- Javelins, Dreadnoughts and Deathstorm Drop Pods
- Secutarii Hoplites and Peltasts, and Terrax-pattern Termites
- Decimators, Greater Blight Drones, Blood Slaughterers, Greater Brass Scorpions, Kytan Ravagers, the Kharybdis Assault Claw, and the Dreadclaw Drop Pod
Imperial Armour Units, That are also in the Horus Heresy (for use in matched and narrative play, including competitive events)
- Adeptus Custodes units
- Imperial Knights
I'm sure some players will be annoyed.

You should see the state of the two Chaos subreddits I keep a loose eye on. So much salt.
Looking at some of the rules for what models are allowed to be used in competitive situations, it does make sense why so many other games are proudly touting that their game is miniatures-agnostic, even when they do have an official line of minis.
10th Edition will be on pre-order from Saturday. Here are the times◊. I'm undecided whether I will get the box or not as while I want the Marines, Tyranids are a low priority collection for me.
Free datasheets are available for the box contents.
Double post for today on Warhammer Community: A look at the Datacard packs that will be available. Probably won't bother with these even if I do start playing again.
A new Deathleaper model. Yowza, this one is awesome! Like a few other new Tyranid models, this one has an almost magical look to it. It looks less like a purely biological quasi-insectoid creature in sci-fi, but more like an entity that crawled from a nightmare realm. With the fleshy cloak, it looks like a Mindflayer about to unleash some psionic spells on its enemies. I am also reminded of Mantic's Nightstalkers, which already appeared like a metaphysical take on Tyranids as living nightmares in a fantasy setting. The new Deathleaper, together with the Neurotyrant and a few others, look like they could with minimal conversion be used as some type of nightmare-entities, summoned by foolish mortal wizards.
Also a bunch of faction focuses for the rules-inclined. Knights made out like bandits while Death Guard eat shit, and not in the way they enjoy.
