No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

...maybe? I kinda wanna see a sandbox of what you're thinking of before I can make up my mind.

It is mostly embryonic at the moment and will post something on my sandbox when I have worked out a few things. I was mainly asking what people thought of the general concept.

Double post but for anyone who is interested, here is an interview with Dan Abnett (I've not watched it myself though as I am not a fan of listening to/watching interviews for some reason, only reading them).

40k-Magic: The Gathering is going to be a thing

Warhammer is the world’s biggest name in tabletop gaming. Magic: The Gathering is the number one fantasy card game. So, what happens when you smush them both together?

The answer can be found in Universes Beyond, a new premium card set for Magic: The Gathering which sees the game’s creators teaming up with some of the world’s biggest storytelling brands – including Warhammer 40,000.

It’s the latest in an illustrious line of recent partnerships that have seen Games Workshop collaborate with the likes of Bandai, McFarlane Toys, and Marvel Comics to bring the worlds and characters of Warhammer to life like never before.

Universes Beyond will bring the mighty heroes, twisted villains, and fearsome xenos races of the 41st Millennium to glossy cardstock. For Warhammer 40,000 fans, it’s a chance to command the forces you know and love in an entirely fresh way – while cooing over some lavish new art, too.

And for Magic: The Gathering fans, it’s an opportunity to discover a rich universe of galactic conquest and betrayal that’s been shaped by decades of games, novels, and media.

When can you get your mitts on these cards, we hear you cry? Well, they’re a little way off yet, but you can rest assured that Warhammer Community will bring you all the latest news on this card-based collaboration.

Interesting.

My wishlist for Warhammer 40k Set:

  • Little chance I know, but separating it into say Masters of Chaos, Lords of the Imperium and Aliens of the Universe Sets would do very well.
  • MDFC Daemon Primarchs (Primarch on one side, their signature weapon on the other)
  • A Charm or Command cycle for the forces of Chaos.
  • Izzet Tzeentch, Rakdos Khorne, Gruul Slaanesh, and Golgari Nurgle.
    • Prowess as Tzeentch's mechanic, Bloodthirst as Khorne's, Dash for Slaanesh, and Infect for Nurgle.
  • Orzhov or Mardu Imperium, with the Emperor as the mandatory busted 5 color legendary, the Golos of the set.
  • Mono-Green Tyranids, helmed by The Swarmlord, who'd be a very big beefy Green boy.
  • Esper Necrons - focusing on artifacts with colors matter and Undying.
  • Jeskai Tau with a focus on Vehicles.

Are they doing a set? I thought it was just going to be Commander precons.

Commander precons feels like the best way to do this.

I'll be honest, I was hoping that it was going the other way - but then, I guess MTG already tried the minis game thing, and it didn't work out.

40k's greatest strength is the setting. I'd say that 40k stuff in other formats works way better than the other way around.

Yeah, I think it's gonna be Commander precons, which actually could be even better than a set.

I could see Roboute, Mortarion, Magnus, and Fulgrim being the generals of four Commander decks.

They usually release Commander precons that aren't set tie-ins in groups of 4-5, and hopefully they're not falling into the GW trap of "in the Imperiumy Imperiumness of the Imperium there is only the Imperium", so my initial prediction would be Imperium, Chaos, Orks, Eldar and either Necrons or Tyranids: a decent cross-section of what the setting has to offer, giving it wider appeal to the fanbase and more interesting options for mechanical themes.

They could be specific subfactions, too, as that would be easier to match with colors.

I doubt they'll be specific subfactions, that feels like the sort of thing to do for a proper set rather than a supplementary crossover product.

One can only imagine they would want these things playable at a wider scale too, so they probably won't be too parasitic either.

If they're doing 40K cards the same way they did the Godzilla promos, every card will be a functional Magic card but with a 40K "skin" on it.

Like, a hypothetical Ork deck might be an Orc tribal deck where at least some of the cards have a skin over the top that is Ghazghkull or Wazzdakka or whoever.

This answer suggests that there will be new cards, as with the Walking Dead cards, but I suspect that there will be functional reprints in there even if there are also new ones. It'd be like reprints in their regular Commander precons.

Also, thinking back on my comment about subfactions, it occurred to me that the obvious ones to choose would be subfactions like Ultramarines and the Black Legion... you know, the closest to generic examples of their faction. (I'm not sure if they'd be the best choices, but if any specific armies are chosen, they seem like the safest.)

I could see Abaddon as being a Voltron Commander. You just suit the big guy up with a bunch of Swords of X and Y, and hope he gets em all without getting hit by Reality Shift.

They could go somewhere interesting with Roboute, or they could go the boring practical route of a Bant Commander who ramps you, draws you cards, and gives a payoff for the above. Which...would actually be completely in character for Roboute.

I could also see Abaddon rewarding you for sacrificing creatures.

Or if we wanted to get more complicated, making it easier for you to get legendary creatures (representing his uncanny charisma and ability to draw together diverse allies), and then rewarding you for sacrificing them.

Soooo... it turns out that the Big Bad of the Eisenhorn, Ravenor, and Bequin series of books that have been building up to for nearly two decades... is Konstantin Valdor. The Yellow King literally was just one of his many MANY names.

Something amusing from Warhammer Community

You find Warhammer all over the world, but sometimes it pops up in very unexpected places. For instance, under a log in a forest. We recently heard a story about a discovery made by a scientist with a passion for taxonomy and the 41st Millennium, and we just had to ask him about it.

Shahan Derkarabetian PhD is a taxonomist at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology. When the opportunity arose to name a new species of arachnid, he took one look at it and drew a connection to one of his favourite characters in Warhammer 40,000.

Abaddon the Despoiler, leader of the Black Legion, Warmaster of the Black Crusades, and architect of the Cicatrix Maledictum. He’s easily one of the most recognisable, iconic, and spiky characters in the setting.

We caught up with Shahan to get the scoop on this awesome turn of events. He was quick to set one thing straight, though – “The species Abaddon despoliator is an arachnid – not a spider, per se. They don’t have fangs or venom, and they don’t make silk.” Fair enough.

“Abaddon despoliator is only found in a small part of Western Australia, where they live in forests underneath logs,” Shahan tells us. “Their population is small and in need of conservation attention.”

“Much like Abaddon the Despoiler is covered in spikes and various sharp things, Abaddon despoliator is covered in spines – maybe they’re a gift from the Dark Gods,” he adds with a laugh.

How do you go about choosing a name for such a significant discovery? “I wanted to honour the importance of Warhammer 40,000 to me and my brother,” he says, “and what better way than naming a new species? The decision to name it after Abaddon, specifically, came from the spines on their body.”

Even when done in good fun, naming a species with a cultural reference is a tried-and-true way to increase exposure and generate interest in science. “A part of this naming decision was the hope that it might raise awareness of our planet’s biodiversity,” recalls Shahan, “exposing a broader population to something they may have not known existed.

While the namesake might be one of the most destructive warlords in the setting, Shahan’s quick to let us know “there’s nothing to fear from Abaddon despoliator. They’re harmless.”

But don’t get too complacent, “perhaps they’re just waiting for their moment in the very, very distant future when the other Abaddon the Despoiler will make the entire galaxy tremble in terror.”

We’re always amazed by the ways the Warhammer hobby touches hobbyists’ lives, and this one is especially fun.

When Shahan’s not making cool scientific discoveries, he’s busy painting up some sweet miniatures – take a look at a couple of his Death Guard! Maybe next time he’ll get to name a moth after Mortarion. Time will tell.
