YMMV / Yaqui Delgado Wants To Kick Your Ass

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: There are a few of these involving Yaqui:
    • Yaqui's bullying of Piddy doesn't come with the intention of getting rid of her. Rather, she sees Piddy's innocence as a weakness that a fellow Latina in the Queens shouldn't have. It's mentioned in the book that Yaqui grew up in a "dog eats dog" world, and therefore tries to "help" Piddy grow out of this innocent, naive stage.
    • Because the book all but states that Yaqui had a rough upbringing, she sees Piddy as the physical manifestation of the life she could've had.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Yaqui raging at Piddy for supposedly seducing the former's boyfriend sounds like a typical case of Green-Eyed Monster. That is until you remember that one of the many reasons Yaqui hates Piddy is for her light skin. Given the colorism that exists within the Latino community, Yaqui was probably worried that her sleazy boyfriend would replace her with more conventionally attractive Latina.
  • The Woobie: The universe really seems to have it out for Piddy Sanchez. She grows up in a rundown apartment with her single mother, is deprived of knowing her father (at first). Right down the line her best friend moved away to Long Island and slowly loses contact with her. Eventually Piddy herself moves away to an unfamiliar high school where she becomes an instant, easy target for Alpha Bitch Yaqui Delgado for petty reasons (she's light skinned and moves her hips), but Piddy is too scared to tell the grownups for fear of retaliation. She's eventually beaten within an inch of her life by Yaqui and gang, discovers that her father was a two-timing cheater, and at the end is forced to transfer schools because her current school is unable to expel all of her bullies.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Calling Yaqui a mere jerkass is understating it, but she qualifies in which the story portrays her as a victim of circumstances. She's implied to have grownup in a rough neighborhood for most of her life, and is even implied to have lived in a neglectful, if not abusive household. Being a Latina immigrant and a woman of color, she likely experienced systemic racism, given how she is constantly in trouble with the law, and is pretty much considered at school to be a lost cause. All in all, the systemic disadvantages she faces are implied to have shaped her into the hateful bully she is today.
