YMMV / XCOM: The Advent Directive

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The Aliens and the Internet series, which chronicles Quisilia's internet trolling, stock purchasing, and introducing other aliens to Earth's internet. At one point he strikes a deal with ADVENT to make action figures and just gives away high-resolution scans of all Collective military units. It's surreal.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The existence of a Sovereign One named the "Traveler" became unintentionally amusing after Xabiar started writing TITANOMACH.
  • Salvaged Story: One of the most common criticisms of the story thus far has been about its handling of the War on Terror, the Middle East, and Islam in general, which inevitably resulted in several accusations of islamophobia levied at Xabiar. In Act IV, Advent Directive takes several steps to rectify this in terms of both backstory and general presentation for the people and the region alike:
    • The addition of the Lion: a soldier and tactician previously aligned with the Caliphate, built up as a foil to the Commander himself. His personality and personal motivations add a new level of depth to the backstory of the War on Terror, as well as the main story itself.
    • The Night Stand does this for the people in general: a seemingly unprepared and under-trained Middle Eastern Legion, under the Lion's command, gets its first moment of glory as it manages to repel an enormous Collective offensive against all odds, in a victory that comes with a deeper impact for both ADVENT and the Collective.
    • The War on Terror File, which massively expands on the events of the eponymous conflict, and even overwriting lore previously established on XCOM: The Hades Contingency.
    • Speaking of Hades Contingency, that story received a massive overhaul in December 2022, to integrate the new portrayal of the War on Terror.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: By the time of The Advent Directive, the differences between ADVENT and the Ethereal Collective have narrowed to the point that there aren't really any heroic factions with relevance remaining, and humanity faces a grim future.
  • Unexpected Character: Chapter 76, the first chapter posted after the year-long hiatus, introduces Dr. Gavin Archer, who most readers would only expect to see in an eventual Mass Effect sequel series.
  • Woobie Species: Mutons are raised from birth in industrial farms that forcefully impregnate fertile females, treated to brutal training regimens that completely retard their social development, and the ones that survive are simply sold in auctions to Ethereal masters who, at best, view them as pets, at worst as cannon fodder. And worse, they've had it beaten into them that this is completely natural.
