• Hype Aversion: In spite of how popular the game became as of 2022, many people still avoid it like the plague for that very reason.
• Mis-blamed: After the New York Times bought the game, many people blamed it for a perceived increase in difficulty. While your mileage may vary on whether it actually has become more difficult, the New York Times isn't to blame, as the first six years or so of answers were set in advance by Wardle. In fact, NYT's only change has been to drop a very small number of words it deemed egregiously difficult.
• That One Level: Almost any word can potentially be tricky if it's one you rarely see and thus are unlikely to think of. But for the majority of players, the words with the lowest success rate are usually those that are obscure and rarely used, contain uncommon letters such as J, K, Q, X, and Z, have repeated letters, or where one missing letter has a lot of possibilities. And of course, combining more than one of these factors will multiply how much of a headache guessing it will be.
