YMMV / Warrior Cats: Squirrelflight's Hope

Go To

  • Overshadowed by Controversy: This book is regarded and/or remembered by most people as a poorly-written book which ruined Bramblestar and Squirrelflight's relationship by throwing their arguments out of proportion, and made them and several other cats act out of character (or derailed Character Development), just for the sake of drama.
  • Broken Base: All the events in this book are basically this, but the most prominent one is Who was in the right: Squirrelflight or Bramblestar? Many people believe Squirrelflight was entirely (or at least mostly) in the right because she was trying to solve the tensions between the Clans, protect the Sisters and Moonlight's innocent kits, and because of Bramblestar constantly berating her and not listening to her. Others argue that Bramblestar was right to put the Clans first and had every right to be angry and frustrated with Squirrelflight because of her constantly going behind his back, undermining his authority, putting the needs of a group of strangers before her own family and Clan, and also at one point asking their own daughter, Sparkpelt to lie to him (putting Sparkpelt in not only the uncomfortable position of having to choose between her parents, but between her leader and her deputy as well). A third contingent goes with Both Sides Have a Point, saying that Bramblestar should've taken Squirrelflight's concerns more seriously, but Squirrelflight also should've realized that she can't just expect Bramblestar to trust her if she constantly goes behind his back and keeps secrets from him.
  • Informed Wrongness: Squirrelflight and Leafpool being on trial for their deception of the Three's parentage, with their entry into Star Clan upon their deaths on the line. Except that they went with the deception was because Star Clan was the one who told Leafpool to follow her heart when she asked for guidance on whether she should run away with Crowfeather. They were also the ones who gently informed her that she was pregnant while lying to Squirrelflight by telling her that she was barren so that she'd be more inclined to claim Leafpool's kits. In short, the sisters are being on trial for doing as they were told. Is it any wonder so many readers hated this?
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • For quite a lot of people, Bramblestar qualifies for this big time. After Squirrelflight disagrees with him during a Gathering, he accuses her of making them look weak and is paranoid over the possibility of Squirrelflight not listening to him, which gets worse when Squirrelflight goes behind his back to try to find a solution and discovers the Sisters in what she believes should be Sky Clan's new home. He spends much of the book making Squirrelflight miserable, humiliates her by restricting her duties, repeatedly uses Squirrelflight's insecurities about kits to upset her, intimidates Leafpool from doing her job, endangers an injured cat's life, and participates in the other Clans except Sky Clan forcing the Sisters out even though one of them is kitting and they would've left in a few moons anyway. His actions indirectly lead to Leafpool and Moonlight's deaths, as well as Squirrelflight's nearly dying. He's supposed to be seen at worst misguided but ultimately well-meaning, and Squirrelflight concludes that both her and Bramblestar are at fault for their marriage woes, but many fans instead see Bramblestar as a Domestic Abuser abusing his power to hurt Squirrelflight and her loved ones for minor slights and the Super Edition caused a noticeable decline in his popularity.
    • For some people, Moonlight and the Sisters as a whole qualify for this. They're supposed to be seen as kind, noble, peaceful cats who are simply following their way of life, just want to be left alone, and are completely innocent in their conflict with the Clans. But due to how one of them injures Leafstar, how Moonlight stubbornly chooses not to retreat from the Clans despite being pregnant and being warned over and over again that she and her Sisters are vastly outnumbered and are trying to fight a battle they can't win, and their traditions regarding toms (treating them with less love than their females and sending them away whether they want to leave or not when they are only six moons and technically still kittens), some feel they don't deserve the respect and support Squirrelflight gives them.
