- Animation Age Ghetto: This movie probably isn't the best for younger kids, but that's where it ends up on the shelves.
- Misaimed Fandom: The film is an allegory for what could happen to affluent Japan if they don't live up to their international responsibilities, but a growing minority of viewers reinterpret it as a Holocaust allegory.
- Nightmare Fuel: Especially when shown on kid's channels.
- One-Scene Wonder: The talking turd. It is also a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment as no other entities, other than humans and roaches, are seen communicating, and there was no implication beforehand poop could talk.
- Squick: Every time the cute, anthropomorphic roaches are seen, these are supposed to be actual roaches. This makes Momoko's disgusted reaction them, especially the wedding scene, make sense.
