• Franchise Original Sin: This episode introduced the plot device where a new engine arrives on the scene and Thomas doesn’t like them. This would become more common in the post-Awdry era in episodes and specials such as Emily's New Coaches, The Great Discovery and The Great Race. However, unlike the aforementioned projects, the idea of Thomas being jealous of Stepney is not from the original story and was added to the adaptation. It can be argued that this is a good thing, as it gives Thomas more of a reason to take umbrage at being shunted.
