• Alternate Character Interpretation: The Inferred Holocaust ending can be a lot less grim depending on whether the Venusians are naive enough to let Earth know that they destroyed the weapon, or they did so in secret and use the nonexistent threat of it to keep the peace.
• Inferred Holocaust: In the introductory notes for later printings, Asimov recounts Frederik Pohl pointing out that as soon as the Venusians had destroyed their superweapon, Earth would take genocidal revenge on them.
