  • Alternative Character Interpretation: For the two psychopomps. Hyder has shown that there's something he'd rather have than God. To many Christians, that IS what damnation is. However he can be excused because the reasons he turned down the gatekeeper were perfectly moral and unselfish; the very concepts a true Heaven would embody and the set up implied it was a morality test God arranged for a fairly amoral man to give him one last chance at redemption.
  • Genius Bonus: The "signs" that Rachel Simpson was talking about that foretold Hyder's death (shadows across the moon, birds flying into the house) are actual Ozark mountain superstitions, with origins in Scottish folk beliefs.
