YMMV / The Tin Drum

Go To

Both Works:

  • Squick: Oskar has a lot of fun with the women while in the body of a three-year-old.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: The story is about a boy who refused to grow up. It has a premise of a children's tale but the book and movie are both very adult and heavily political.

Film:

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Considering Maria hesitated a very long time to push Oskar away when he buried his face in her crotch, as well as the fact that she thought it was a good idea to undress in front of him to begin with, one could easily interpret her actions as that of a sexually confused young woman. Not that she could be entirely to blame since Oskar is chronologically (and somewhat mentally) a teenager by that point.
  • Awesome Music: As expected from Maurice Jarre. As fittingly for the title, the drumming stanzas are quite catchy.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Oskar's mother watches a horse head being used by a fisherman as bait to lure eels. When it's brought to shore, she vomits violently. Alfred buys some of the eels, and though she initially refuses to eat them, but after Jan comforts her, she eats them and proceeds to eat nothing but fish for the next few days. Then she declares that her baby will never be born before dying off-screen, the explanation never revealed.
