YMMV / The Simpsons S 8 E 4 Burns Baby Burns

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: Larry Burns. Some like him due to Rodney Dangerfield's performance and the additional depth he gives Mr. Burns, while others find him an obnoxious Spotlight-Stealing Squad whose existence acts as a blatant excuse to promote a popular celebrity instead of being his own character, something which would become one of the most disliked aspects of the series after the classic era.
  • Franchise Original Sin: The season 23 finale "Lisa Goes Gaga" is widely detested for having its guest star, Lady Gaga, take over the episode to the point that the show's ensemble are playing second fiddle to her. Though some would argue that this episode 15 years earlier was guilty of the same things, as it's all about Mr. Burns's illegitimate son Larry trying to win his affections and doesn't feature the Simpson family much. The difference was that in "Burns, Baby Burns", the guest star was an established standup comedian, Rodney Dangerfield, whereas with "Lisa Goes Gaga", their guest, Lady Gaga, hadn't done much acting at the time and the writers weren't sure of how to play off her talents.
