• Surprisingly Improved Sequel: The last of what are generally considered the stronger sequels. This film has received praise for its nuanced exploration of Littlefoot's relationship with his father, and, alongside VII, having the strongest connection to the original movie by showing some of the aftereffects of the Great Earthshake and showing Littlefoot's mother in flashbacks for the first time in the sequels.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Ali, the beloved Guest-Star Party Member of IV and her herd, are completely absent in this film (they don't even get a mention) despite them also being longnecks who would have likely gotten the same prophetic dreams as Littlefoot did. Meaning we don't get to see Littlefoot, his friends and Ali reunite (like the Sequel Hook ending of IV implied), nor do we get to see Ali meet Bron and Shorty for the first time.
