YMMV / The Chronicles of Karai Getting Her Shit Together

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: In Chapter 29, Karai takes Leo to KFC, claiming that it is super popular in Japan during the holidays. In Real Life, KFC as Christmas dinner has been a widespread practice in Japan since 1974.
  • Angst Aversion: The fanfic has far less action than its parent series, instead preferring to take its various controversial subjects (rape, child molestation, human trafficking, depression, self-harm, etc.) and bury its face in it for many chapters at a time.
  • Angst? What Angst?: While the fanfic is full of angst from various characters, Raphael gets over the fact that he loses an eye to the Creep very quickly.
  • Arc Fatigue: In the original series, the Turtles, April and Casey stay at her family's farmhouse for the first eight episodes of Season Three. Just barely a third of a season with 22-minute episodes. Here, they don't return to New York until twenty-five chapters in, with much of the story padded with heart-to-hearts and inner-monologues about how everything sucks and their mixed feelings on their lives.
  • Squick: There are various chapters that mention what turtle penises are like and how turtles expel waste, with special mention about how Casey and Raphael did a literal dick-measuring contest. It's all Played for Laughs of course, but at times it gets a little too explicit.
  • The Woobie:
    • Karai. She was physically and sexually abused for most of her life by a man she thought was her father. When she finds out that he isn't her father, she tries to escape, only for him to mutate her into a snake in a failed plan to kill Splinter. She fights her way through an invaded New York before she finds out where the Hamato Clan has escaped to, only to find a collapsing family unit who doesn't even want her. Then not only does she turn human when she was more happy being a snake-mutant during their rebellion against the Kraang, but she finds evidence that she might actually be the Shredder's daughter and doesn't know how to process it.
    • Leonardo. He suffers from chronic, crippling depression that gives him suicidal thoughts, self-harming impulses and body dysmorphia that may or may not have been caused by being molested by humans before he and his family moved to the sewers. He kept all of this to himself for years - manifesting in his overprotectiveness as a leader and overcompensating as a student and son to Splinter - before it pushes him to the edge after surviving a near-death beatdown by Shredder and his minions. He spends months in a coma and months more-so being hovered over by his family, both to make sure he is healing physically and because they discovered that he has been harming himself.
    • Donatello. He had spent most of his youth ill and looked after by his family, leading to him later in life becoming a Workaholic to compensate and to help with responsibilities. Then while his brothers return to New York, he gets captured where he is inhumanely experimented on where he is then raped and permanently blinded. While he tries holding himself together, he now has frequent PTSD flashbacks and panic attacks whenever he hears something that reminds him of his capture.
