YMMV / Supernatural S 06 E 20 The Man Who Would Be King

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: This entire episode feels like one for writer/director Ben Edlund, who has been open about his love for Castiel and his desire for fans to understand his motives. Despite the decision by showrunner Sera Gamble to make Castiel the Winchester brothers' primary antagonist of the season, this episode made the character's fans love him even more and point out that the Winchesters themselves had worked with villains, including Crowley, before. Castiel goes on to make the ghastly decision to remove Sam's wall in the season finale and commit outright atrocities in the first episode of Season 7 but this episode allowed many fans to continue to sympathize with him.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Why do the angels in Heaven still seem to be in their human vessels? Because we, the viewers, are human, and therefore limited, so this is how we see them.
  • Ho Yay: Dean's reaction to Castiel's betrayal feels a whole lot like someone finding out their significant other has cheated on him, and Castiel's longing looks at Dean while he is raking leaves have a distinct I Want My Beloved to Be Happy feel to them.
