YMMV / Star Trek: The Next Generation S4E10 "The Loss"

Go To

  • Memetic Mutation: The scene where Troi gets all her empathic powers back at once has seen some NSFW manipulation. If you really, really like Toilet Humor, here's one.
  • She Really Can Act: Not that Marina Sirtis couldn't, of course; she just rarely came off as strongly as other members of the main cast. That said, "The Loss" is one of her most powerful performances in the franchise.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • It's strange that Troi never really interacts with Geordi in this episode, since he's lived with a disability his whole life. Which might be the point: since Geordi was born disabled, he never had to experience becoming disabled, thus Troi likely didn't think he would empathize with her situation more than the rest of the crew.
    • Troi also isn't actually the only empath or telepath on board. There's at least one Vulcan (Dr. Selar) and probably more. This situation absolutely calls for a mind meld, but that would have revealed too early that her senses were overwhelmed.
  • Values Resonance: Marina Sirtis once said she got a lot of positive feedback on this episode from Trekkies with disabilities.
