YMMV / Star Trek: Deep Space Nine S01E08 "Dax"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Enina asks Jadzia to live "a long, fresh and wonderful life." Jadzia is murdered just five years later.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • Sisko is committed to preventing Dax from standing trial and dictates to his staff that this is their official position, even if they encounter evidence that supports the "wrong" position. This is portrayed as loyalty. However, his behavior bumps uncomfortably against the real-world Blue Wall of Silence, in which people in authority (typically police officers, but the practice also exists elsewhere) will protect their comrades from prosecution regardless of whether the charges are valid. Further, Sisko is never shown to be wrong for taking this stance.
    • Odo abuses his authority as constable to extort Quark into closing his business for several days. While his actions are portrayed as heavy-handed, he remains a sympathetic character. In the decades since the episode aired, however, the abuse of authority by police officers has become an ever-increasing hot-button issue, rendering Odo's actions much less sympathetic to modern eyes.
    • Bashir's Dogged Nice Guy behavior around Dax probably came off as cute when the episode first aired, but it comes across is stalkerish to modern viewers. His advances are politely but unmistakably declined, and he persists because she doesn't explicitly tell him to fuck off.
