• Overshadowed by Controversy: The movie was the subject of heavy criticism due to being filmed in South Africa during the apartheid regime. Roger Moore was also criticized for being in two other South Africa-filmed movies, Gold (1974) and The Wild Geese (1978).
• Questionable Casting: Ian Holm as a character named Mohammed.
• Values Dissonance: The scenes where Flynn, Sebastian and the other poachers gleefully gun down elephants for the ivory tusks can be pretty hard for modern audiences to watch with the knowledge that poaching in Africa has driven several species, including elephants, to the brink of extinction.
